Hi,
A week ago on Monday, Ethel started having blood in her (very loose) faeces. We took her to the vet who thought she had colitis and gave her some tablets and paste. She finished both after about a week then the blood cleared up and her faeces became firmer, and she has had no blood and been doing pretty normal poos for a few days, although there has been a small bit of yellowy mucus. Then, tonight, she had blood in it again. She had a normal one earlier, and then did a bloody one a few hours later. But it was still firmer that when she first started with colitis.
She had a sausage at the competition the weekend before she started with it, so the vet maybe thought it could be too much human food. They normally both have cheese, sausage, chicken, ham etc for competitions. We're not giving her any human food now, just healthy dog treats.
Has anyone had any experience with this? When do you think it should clear up completely? They're such a worry!
Thanks.

Hi BorderTerrier Are you still feeding Arden Grange Sensitive? At this stage I would probably fast for 24 hours with access to water only. Ethel will be passing blood because her colon is inflamed. So best to allow it to rest and calm down. Then introduce her normal food but omit any human food or dog treats. You could also offer several small meals a day instead of 1/2 a day because this will be easier on her digestive system. Generally colitis is caused by food allergies/intolerances and sometimes overfeeding too. Don't worry it looks worse than it is. The key is to do everything gradually and keep her diet simple, at least for the next couple of weeks.

EDIT I have edited out what I had put (had put a long blurb about what my monsters have had in the past) as you have much better advice from Gypsy Hope you and your vet can get to the source of what is causing the Colitis and that Ethel is back fighting fit soon.

That's good news BorderTerrier. It's good to hear from you. I know that you're probably busy with one thing and another, but we miss you on here.
