Many years ago we taught Kizzy a release command for when she was let off her lead.
Last week I said it to her for the last time as we had to make the sad decision to give her final rest.
We rehomed her from an animal shelter fourteen + years ago and she had been my constant companion since. She was a cute "pup" when she arrived and grew into the most beautiful dog -inside and out- that anyone could wish for. She tried her paw at agility, HTM and flyball but her favourite pastime was walking with us on the beach, across fields or in a park using her nose to find something disgustingly smelly to roll in!! We think she probably walked about fourteen THOUSAND miles with us as we averaged between 20 and 30 miles a week.
She fought back from SCI last summer but had become increasingly frail over the past few weeks. She lost her appetite, had cataracts, little hearing and was getting wobbly on her back legs. Each illness seemed to take a bit more of our Kizzy away and we made the decision that enough was enough.
She went very peacefully here at home and - typically for Kizzy - without a murmur. She was SO brave and we'll miss her so much.
My last words to her were "Go sniff" - hope she heard them.
Thanks for "listening".

Aww so sorry for your loss meandmine she sounded like a very loyal faithful R.I.P Kizzy As much as I loved the life we had and all the times we played, I was so very tired and knew my time on earth would fade. I saw a wondrous image then of a place that's trouble-free Where all of us can meet again to spend eternity.
I saw the most beautiful Rainbow, and on the other side Were meadows rich and beautiful -- lush and green and wide! And running through the meadows as far as the eye could see Were animals of every sort as healthy as could be! My own tired, failing body was fresh and healed and new And I wanted to go run with them, but I had something left to do.
I needed to reach out to you, to tell you I'm alright That this place is truly wonderful, then a bright Glow pierced the night. 'Twas the Glow of many Candles shining bright and strong and bold And I knew then that it held your love in its brilliant shades of gold.
For although we may not be together in the way we used to be, We are still connected by a cord no eye can see. So whenever you need to find me, we're never far apart If you look beyond the Rainbow and listen with your heart

So sorry for your loss of your Kizzy meandmine. Sounds like she had a beautiful life with you and you have many memories. I had to have my dog Aztec pts last year and he was 17 and like Kizzy had cateracts, was deaf and very unsteady on his feet. You always know when enough is enough. RIP Kizzy xx

I'm really sorry to read the news of your Kizzy meandmine she sounds a wonderful dog. A real member of your family & she obviousy was & always will be greatly loved. You've made the last & most heart-rending act of love you can for her & she will have thanked you for it. I'm sure she heard and appreciate your final "go sniff". Most of here have had to make that decision & the gone through the grief that follows but although Kizzy has physically gone, like all our past pets, she will be always with you in your heart & memories. RIP Kizzy well again & playing happily with friends new & old at Rainbow Bridge

Many thanks for your kind words and the lovely poem. Cannot believe just how much both we, and our other dog, miss her. Some may think it is too soon to be looking for another dog but we have decided to start searching and are busily trawling through web sites of various rescue centres. We have a Kizzy shaped space on our sofa next door to where her little "sister" sleeps - watch this space and I'll let you know when it has become occupied again.

I don't think it is too soon to be looking for another dog. Read @justgilly's thread called Phoebe and Loki, the only difference is that they are cats. Only you know when you are ready to fill that Kizzy shaped space on your sofa and I wish you luck in finding a rescue dog waiting for their chance of a wonderful forever home with you. Let us know how you get on.

As lotsofcats said there is no right or wrong time to make the decison to get another dog only you can say when your ready. I think its a compliment to Kizzy that she has left such a gap in your lives that makes you want to fill it & help another dog in need. I'll look forward to hearing about your new addition to the family, when you find the right one, meandmine

WE searched for months for a new play mate/ sofa surfer for our little dog. S/he had to be the "right" one whom we knew our present dog would accept and be happy with but despite trawling through LOTS of rescue sites we had no success. We therefore started to look at puppies and ( hopefully) on Sunday will be bringing home a five months old little girl to become the newest member of our household

What great news, I look forward to hearing all about your puppy - have you picked a name yet? What breed is she? I am sure that Kizzy will be looking down and will approve.

What great news, I look forward to hearing all about your puppy - have you picked a name yet? What breed is she? I am sure that Kizzy will be looking down and will approve. She is a black and tan Cavalier King Charles Spaniel ( from fully tested parents so hopefully we have done as much as we can to find a Cavalier without the associated health problems). No name as yet but we are open to suggestions if anyone has any ideas . Sure Kizzy will be happy to look at the puppy from afar - as long as she doesn't have put up with it!! I'll start a new thread when she arrives and we have some photos.
