CollieSlave; is my variety bad? I am not feeding all, I started with Burns puppy then moved to Symply adult, then added branflakes for Earl's anal glands, now thinking of moving to CSJ, bearing in mind Earl is an agility competitor, and the reviews on the CSJ website were positive, and their dogs soon sprang to life in the world of agility.... AND..... it made their dogs stools firmer! I cannot now recall what Bextull said about CSJ (but I can guess!). I think you know what people think of, say, Bakers which is not cheap to buy. CSJ is cheap to buy - and you get what you pay for! I know there are a lot of positive comments that you mention on the CSJ website and I am sure that these come from people who really believe that it is good dog food. But there are an awful lot of people who feed poor quality food to their dogs - some do it because they don't care about quality, only price. Others do so because they have not read the ingredients and do not understand what ingredients might be good or bad for their dogs. On the forum everyone is very interested in what they feed their dogs and go to a lot of trouble to decide what they think is best for their dogs. Also remember that if you buy cheap dog food you need to feed more (often a lot more!) to give the dog proper levels of nutrition so it is not really cheap food if you have to do this. I would not feed Bryn CSJ food - he has Eden and/or Applaws and Naturediet.

CollieSlave, Exactly. Some people believe that they are feeding the best! I was talking to a lady the other day who thought she was buying a top brand of food........ Pedigree!! She must have gathered by the look on my face that it wasn't because she questioned it! We then had a lovely conversation about Raw feeding and she eagerly went away to find out more.

Not keen on Burns after one bag made all 3 of my dogs ill at the same time and they then denied their food was to blame. All 3 were fine when switched to another food, but to be fair, they had been fine on Burns up until that bag. I recommend Skinners, I say it over and over again, but its so good

Hi BorderTerrier Bramble is fed Burns puppy, as that is what we are given for her. It's OK - nothing special though. And for me, I wouldn't choose it. It does have a fair bit of grain (it's the first thing listed on the bag!) and not much meat at all really. Why don't you go for something with a higher meat and lower (if any at all) grain content? Such as Applaws (which Amber had and did pretty well on) or other ones I've heard of - Canagan, Orijen and Purizon? I don't quite see a huge difference between Burns and Symply overall.
I suppose you could switch between a few different brands so Earl gets variety? Maybe?
Luckily we have not had any anal gland issues since switching to raw. (Both ours did have problems previously)

Thanks for the replies everyone, and the recommendations AnnaAmber; have you switched both Amber and Holly onto raw, or just Amber?

Holly went on to raw about a week after I switched Amber. Was going to get her to use up the end of her kibble, but she got really upset seeing Amber enjoying raw and only having kibble in her bowl that I decided to take the plunge with her too - and I've kept the kibble to use as treats.

Good idea AA I'm very glad to hear they are both getting used to their new diet, and loving raw Good luck for future feeding.

You know my thoughts on mutt food think original origin of dog = carnivore carnivores are designed to eat meat They are now probably classed as omnivores (just)!!
Therefore think dogs should have food that is high meat, low grain to grain free.
From a previous post I understand that the fibre content is important to you with regard to Earls anal glands
(crude fibre amounts taken from company websites or whichdogfood) Symply = 5% Burns toy and small breed = 2%!!!! Orijen = ~5% Applaws = 4.5%
Therefore why are you considering moving to a food which on face of it is lower fibre than you are currently feeding ? I know on previous threads your family have seemingly dismissed the grain free options but as you can see from the above their fibre contents are not too bad!!
I agree with other comments I don't see that moving Earl to Burns is going to make much difference considering they are both high grain. Its probably cheaper to stay on what you are using. I have fed Burns and now I understand dog food ingredients better I probably would not use again unless I had an old dog who required restricted diet needs.
