Anyone watch Paul O'Grady just now? Poor Spencer with his warty virus It made me wonder, because Ellie currently has a wart on the inside of her mouth (it has been checked by the vet). Now, maybe I'm a bit naive, but I didn't realise that it was a contagious condition and that she shouldn't really mix with other dogs! She's been at dog shows in the time I've known she had the wart. Now I feel bad. I also now have a quandary. We are going to be attending our first KC HTM show in October, but obviously she won't be able to attend if she has this wart (due to the 21 days rule the KC have). Luckily, I have longer than 21 days to get rid of it and have been looking into possible remedies. Does anyone have any experience with using the homeopathic remedy Thuja? I've read that this can make a real difference and that people have seen results fairly quickly. My main question, I suppose, is can the Thuja you buy for humans be used on dogs? gypsy not sure if you can help with this?

No I did not see Paul O'Grady's program. Don't feel bad, you did not know it has the potential for being passed on. Sorry I have no idea, other than papilloma virus is behind most warts, thats as far as my knowledge goes!
I would have thought many dogs have the papilloma virus? Realize that oral warts may be different from normal warts but just think how many dogs are walking about with a wart somewhere on them?
No idea about Thuja?
Would it be useful to look into what foods help support the immune system?
Hope Gypsy or someone similar can advise on it soon.

Well I would have thought the same caz2golden. From what I've read, it's all linked. When I've looked in her mouth today (to do her teeth), it is definitely smaller. I think it's on it's way out anyway. But we started the Thuja anyway. Anything to help speed it along! One site mentioned a good canine probiotic, which I really should look into as I imagine it might help with her scooting too (which she doesn't do as much anymore).

I have to admit this is not something I have a great deal of experience in. Though I do know that Poodles are especially susceptible to the papilloma virus. Seen quite a few Poodles with several cauliflower-looking warts on their bodies. Know one in particular who I think we counted ten on at her last appointment. She also has a rather defunct immune system now so likely not a coincidence! Although its considered contagious, like any virus it won't affect every dog that comes into contact with it. If a dog's immune system is robust and working well it will probably not develop the papilloma virus. No different really to Kennel cough - in a particular environment lots of dogs might be exposed to the kennel cough virus but only a minority will be directly affected by it. I had a quick look in my book Heal your dog the natural way by Richard Allport and he too suggests Thuja (which you're already using) and applying banana skin to the wart - not sure how easy this would be if its in the mouth?

It will never do any harm to add a good probiotic supplement to the diet. A huge amount of immune cells (about 70%) are located in a dog's digestive tract so if that part of the body is working well, its makes sense that everything else will.

Thanks gypsy, that's reassuring. They did mention that on the Paul O'Grady programme as the woman who ended up adopting Spencer said that her dogs were all healthy etc. and won't be as susceptible. I'm not sure I'd be able to apply banana skin to it even for a second as she doesn't really like me doing her teeth, and she's not fond of banana so I think I'll stick with the Thuja and hope it gets rid of it quicker. It's much, much smaller than last week so I think she'll be clear in plenty of time for the HTM show. I'll definitely have to look into getting a probiotic then. Is YumPro considered the best one out there or is there something else that I could get?

I was thinking the same what is deemed a good probiotic? Are natural probiotics like Kefir better than pre-prepared products like YuDigest?
