Hi our 9 month old collie/lab cross has been diagnosed with demodex mange and was just wondering from people's experience how long this takes to clear up? We tried the advocate but after 2.5 weeks it seemed to be getting worse so took him back to the vets! They've given us some aludex solution to give him weekly baths then back in 3 weeks for another skin scrape! Since the bath he has lost a lot of fur on his back leg and I have read that the mites activate and relocate so it appears worse before it gets better! I've started to notice clumps of brown gunk stuck to his fur also which I've seen can be dead mites and the toxins! My only concern was the affect from he aludex baths he becomes very very low in mood and laid there whimpering and just seems restless but wants to sleep all the time like he can't get comfy! Have also read that giving them immune boosting vitamins helps but not sure where to get these? Any help/advice/experience would be greatly appreciated! Thanks x

Don't have any experience with mange personally but wishing you luck with finding a solution. Hope your dog is better soon as well, it must be so uncomfortable

He isn't scratching as much just hated the way he was after the bath! Normally such a cheeky lively pup and to see him just laid there in a world of his own all the time was horrid! Just given him his 2nd bath so hopefully this one won't be as bad xx

Hi katlil84I'm a vet nurse so have seen quite a few cases of demodex mange over the years and sympathise with you, its a very frustrating condition! The Aludex wash contains amitraz which is an insecticide and can cause neurological symptoms. So your dog's behaviour, although concerning, is not uncommon. How long do the symptoms last for? If longer than 24 hrs speak to your vet. Regarding your question about vitamins...I would be careful because of your dog's age, breeds (medium to large) and if you are feeding a complete diet, you don't want to cause an imbalance that could potentially affect his health. If a dog has a condition like demodex mites the immune system is faulty and therefore needs to become balanced rather than boosting it! It might be worth contacting Dorwest Herbs - they are very knowledgeable and may be able to recommend one of their products. www.dorwest.com/HTH

We were also told to carry on with the the advocate so he will be having a 2nd dose of that on Saturday! He was originally a Romanian rescue and then we bought him off a private seller so the poor thing has had a lot of upheaval and I'm assuming the stress is what could have brought all this on! We had asked his previous owner if he had a skin condition but they said it was from play fighting with their other dog but we weren't convinced so had him checked out so not entirely sure how long he has had it before we've got him treatment either xs

Bless him he has been through a lot in his young life. Well yes stress probably does have some bearing on his health issues. He may have started off with localised demodex mange and when this wasn't treated by his previous owner, developed generalised demodex mange which is more difficult to treat. The symptoms you describe we often see in pets that have recently been bathed with flea/tick shampoos, spots on treatments or wear flea/tick collars - its the chemicals unfortunately. Your boy sounds like he's in good hands now though and hopefully he will respond well to treatment.
