My nanny has Alzheimer's, so her dog, Holly (in my DP,) doesn't have the best life right now. My nanny was a very active lady and used to go on 1-3 hour long walks daily well into her 60s. Holly went to a groomer regularly, was taken for check ups at the vet often, fed what was considered a high quality food, played with, and walked twice a day every single day. Now she doesn't get walked every day as my nanny gets lost, she often has mats that need to be cut out when I visit as nanny forgets to brush her, and she is quite depressed in herself. She doesn't get played with any more
Now, for months she has had crusty sores on her mouth on both sides under her canines. When she had her tumour (which I found, because she wasn't being checked over,) and had most of her tail removed, I had a frank discussion with their vet, telling him of nanny's Alzheimer's and how they, the vet, would need to arrange a check up every month if they wouldn't mind. He said he'd see what he could do, he has my mum's number (my parents live near them but I do not,) and he saw her sores on her mouth at that time, which was October!! She STILL has the sores, and the only thing the vet have arranged is to have Holly vaccinated. DOGS THAT HAVE HAD CANCER SHOULD NOT BE RE-VACCINATED! I told them that, I said to the vet that she was not to be vaccinated any more because she had an aggressive cancer not only did she have the core vaccines, she also had a full round of Lepto 4! Sorry for 'shouting,' but this is very stressful for me, because I feel I have so little control and I was relying on the vets. They made sure to vaccinate her, but have left her with painful sores on her mouth.
I'm in the process of 'vetting' a place where Holly can go twice a week where they will walk her, play with her and just love her. It's nearby and they will pick her up. It's like doggy daycare. My grandad is very untrusting and wants me to check it out first. He's also very stubborn, and very proud, and as he has Parkinson's he finds it embarrassing being around strangers. So I'm up against a lot with this! I'm really trying to convince him to let me organise her going there. She has nipped someone who was delivering something to the house (nanny lets her out which she wouldn't have done before,) as she is a nervous dog with little exercise. Their housekeeper hits her as a punishment when she barks at or nips someone, so I'm desperate to sort this out.
Please don't misunderstand, my grandparents adore her and nanny gives her a lot of attention, love and cuddles when she is in the room with her. The problem is the lack of exercise and training, and needing someone to check her over physically. Nanny also feeds her huge chunks of cake all day long, another thing she would never do. She used to tell us off for giving bits of toast to the dogs!
Her behaviour isn't too bad. She is not a manically under-stimulated dog, but I want her to have a nice life rather than an OK one, so I hope we can sort this out. I am so angry with the vets though. A family friend who visits them often takes Holly to the vet when they call, and I spoke to him about it. He totally didn't get why she wouldn't need to be vaccinated. I understand that, I'm not a vet and to him, why wouldn't he trust a vet? I could tell he was unsure about not vaccinating her next year, and it's because he loves Holly and would worry about that. Therefore I need to get the vet to agree no more vaccines! Nothing is ever straight forward when it comes to dogs!
