Rachel emailed me just after midnight last night which I've only just seen but here's her mail
I've wished her well from me & from forum friends.
Hi Toni,
I'm just writing to let you know that Iona (mackerel) is in an emergency vet hospital. She's been in there since Sunday lunchtime.
The OH got up on Sunday morning to see that Iona had been sick all over the house. He knew it was her because she was sick again not long afterwards. She was being so sick she eventually started to bring up yellow bile from her stomach, and by lunchtime we decided to call our own vet. She wouldn't eat or drink, and was quiet depressed. Due to the bank holiday they don't open again till Tuesday.
We took her in to a vets now referrals hospital on Sunday, as advised by our vets answering machine.
Basically, she's been in there ever since, she had a IV fluids, pain relief, sedation for X-rays (two of them). The radiologist who looked at the x-rays thought they could see linear (i.e. string) in her intestines, which was causing her intestines to be all bunched up and pulling her colon too. She had surgery on Saturday night, which she's came through ok, nothing found with regards to a foreign body, even though the x-rays showed something there, they checked her stomach and intestines and put every back in the right way. They've taken biopsies of her stomach and intestines for our own vet to check.
On Saturday night the emergency vets bill was two and half thousand pounds. We had to pay £125 consultation fee on Sunday when she was first seen, so I'm frightened to ask what the bill is now with another nights stay, and more fluid, pain med and antibiotics. Thankfully were insured through Petplan for both Ailsa and Iona.
At the moment, they really don't know what's been wrong with her, and have told us they might never know. Ailsa has been ok. They think it's possibly been a gastro type bug, but they said in a cat that doesn't go out it's very rare indeed especially when she's had a bunched up intestines and colon all in the wrong place. She certainly not out of the woods yet.
We saw her tonight for the first time since she was admitted on Sunday, and although she seemed perkier, we think that was down to the pain meds etc. She has been shaved the full length of her tummy and up her sides, and her front leg too, where the catheter is still in. She has a large surgical wound going from her chest right down to her bum (almost) She also has a Elizabethan collar on as well now because she licked her wound.
We've had to buy a cage for her, because we've been informed that she'll need 4 weeks of cage rest. As jumping is a complete no-no. How I am supposed to control an 11 month old kitten otherwise.
The other problem is that this could happen again.
I'll be phoning the vets tomorrow to see how she is, and if she's getting discharged. Also calling the insurance company and our own vets to make an appointment for them to see her. They should get a report from the emergency vets tomorrow about Iona's stay with them.
Ailsa is very sookie, and is always looking around for her sister. They've never been apart for so long before, the longest they've been apart was a couple of hours last year when Ailsa neutering wound got an infection.
I'll send you an update when I know more tomorrow (hopefully)
