Just returned from a trip to Spain. Have been seeing this bird for the last couple of years just outside Valencia (Spain). Unfortunately what can't be seen in the rather poor photograph is the crested head. My wife and I thought it sounded like and looked like bulbuls we had seen in India. Is this a correct identification? If so what is it doing in Spain? Is it migratory, off-course or just an escapee?

Hahaha thanks for the vote of confidence scallywag Bulbuls are a little out of my birdwatching experience having never been abroad where they're found so I had to google the species I'd heard of the bulbul family but wasn't 100% sure till I looked them up. Found this clip of one singing.....any help? Very smart bird - I'd be thrilled to see one of those!!!

As to the rest of your questions... They sound like quite a popular cage bird (according to google) so perhaps the one you saw WAS an escape or, from the sound of things seeing as you've seen it for a couple of years, a naturalised bird According to Wikipaedia there's a few feral colonies in parts of the USA and Hawaii so no reason why there cannot be any in Spain too. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red-whiskered_bulbul
