My vets use Nobivac too, but I think they're still doing the DHP one every other year. Lepto is done every year though I think.

We've recently adopted an 19month border collie bitch. She was a stray but has obviously been in a home at some stage as is house trained, used to the car etc. The vet has restarted her vaccinations but insists we don't walk her for three weeks until the second vaccination. Over cautious or reasonable?

Welcome to the forum auntyp hopefully someone with more knowledge than me (I'm a cat owner & only had ones that had current vaccinations awhen we got them) can answer that question.

Shame vet did not titre test before starting the re-vaccinating process to find out if your rescue was covered already.
As you do not know the vaccination history of your rescue, this could be first set of vaccinations it has had. Your vet has said what they would say to anyone who has an unvaccinated dog. Also you have to remember if they say go exercise your dog and it got ill then there would be a liability issue. I think what the vet has said makes sense and is reasonable, when you think about it from their perspective.
As to if you follow the vet advice, only you can decide!
You need to consider things like if there is an issue in local area with lepto, distemper, parvo, KC etc at the moment which could increase the risk for your dog if it is not fully vaccinated. Can you walk areas that are not highly frequented with dogs as obviously if you have to walk somewhere where lots of dogs walk then that increases risk of coming into contact with things.
I have always had dogs from 8 weeks old so know their vaccination history. Really need some of the members who have taken on rescues to advise on what they have done.

Welcome to the forum auntyp My Alfie was a stray, so he had to start his jabs. We still took him out for walks after his first jab because we weren't advised not to, otherwise we probably would have kept him in for how ever long would have been advised. Like caz2golden has said, it is up to you at the end of the day

Jumping in instead of starting a new thread.
Those who do give boosters, do you stop at a certain age?
Alfie's boosters are due November and he'll be 14 in January, he's had boosters his whole life. I'd rather stop to be honest, now he has kidney disease, less chemicals the better but also paranoid he might catch something (lets face it, Alfie is good at getting ill lol).

Ask the vet to titre test him instead barley. That should show if he has sufficient immunity. To be honest, I'm surprised they've not suggested stopping his vaccinations already. Pepper, as you know, turned 8 in July and I'm not planning on getting her vaccinated anymore but I will titre test her to ensure she has sufficient immunity. Last time she was titre tested, it showed that she had low immunity to canine distemper but the vet said that that was probably because it's just not seen anymore. She couldn't tell me the last time she saw a case of it and then agreed that it would be ok to not vaccinate on that basis as you can't just vaccinate for distemper.

Thanks orpheous87, I might do that. I haven't mentioned about vaccines to them so they haven't either, if I did ask maybe they'd say to stop anyway.

They might do, yeah. I'm sure I've heard of vets saying not to vaccinate older dogs before. The titre tests are normally about the same price as a vaccination I think (at least they are up here) and if it shows immunity then you won't need to worry about vaccinating. I'm pretty sure all the diseases covered by the core vaccine are treatable anyway, although I can understand why you'd be paranoid about him catching one of them given what he's already been through!

I feel bad that I forgot to ask for Titres this year, thinking it was a non core (i.e lepto) year only to find out after appointment it was the whole lot, must put in diary for doing in 2020 (i.e when cores are due next)! Always question if its still L2, I have made decision that they will not get L4 again (had it back in Norfolk few years back), heard too many bad things.
When I questioned about what is common locally my vet said they sees cases of lepto (linked to fact area is a livestock area), the odd Parvo and KC is issue at this time of year when tourists are about!

I will have to look at his vaccine card but I think he had DHP the year before last so is just due for lepto this year anyway, so I think I will probably skip them all together. If immunity does come back low then I'm not sure I would have him done anyway so may be a waste of time!
He is definitely due rabies this year so I think I will just keep to the bare minimum/necessary evil.

barley When my late Cocker Spaniel was around 13,the owner of the boarding kennels we used told us not to have his boosters done anymore, as he would have more than enough in his system to protect him,so happily he was able to still go in when we went away on holidays. He lived to be 16.5. The problem is if you want to board him, would the kennels you use be happy with that?

I'm curious about titres now, I've heard of them before but what exactly does it involve? I mean It probably wouldn't be an option for Samson as he goes into kennels and they need core vaccines and lepto (kc is at owners discretion however) but would still be interested in info
