Glad daughter's dog was ok migsy, I never give Earl rawhides; a good stuffed kong, stagbar or tripe bone are the safest options! Never heard of a tripe bone, do you mean tripe flavored or do you mean dried tripe? Tripe is stomach!! Tripe bones are basically thick bones with a hole through the middle - this hole is filled with 'tripe'. That's all I know.

You mean something like this? www.dogsstuff.co.uk/good-boy-tripe-calcium-filled-bone-210g-6382-p.asp If it is its a stuffed beef bone!! I stopped giving my dogs these as dogs can shatter the bones (as they are cooked beef bones).

Glad your daughters dog is fine now, and it's lucky your daughter got to her in time!
We never really use to get hide chews, as they use to give Winnie an upset stomach and Tilly isn't interested in them (apart from holding the chew so Alfie can not have it and to bury it in the backgarden). Since having Alfie with us, he has had a couple - The last bone he had, a chunk had come away. It was a good job I was watching him, else I dread to think what might have happened. bectil

So pleased daughter got home in time to get to her dog before any damage was done. Hide chews can also cause internal problems. A friend of mine had a standard poodle who became ill and the vets couldn't find what was wrong, so decided to do an exploratory internal opp and found a piece rawhide stuck to the dogs intestine causing a blockage. Needless to say she has never allowed her dogs to have hide chews again.

I do give Riley hide chews has they are good for his teeth especially whilst he is teething, but i am very aware that he could choke so i do watch him and when he starts getting down it i always remove it and replace it with a new one. My older dog did choke on a hide chew but she was just prone to swallowing everthing and not chewing but she was fine. Hide chews are like anything else you just have to be carefull and don't leave unattended. Riley also has a stag bone.

I would never give hide chews to my dogs - you do not know the source of the chew - or what might be in it -
"The problem with this is that they can contain powerful animal by-products and chemicals that are extremely harmful to your dog. Mercury and lead shot are a few of several chemicals which have been found in rawhide chews. Mercury and lead are both known for causing massive destruction to internal structures. They are also known for causing reproductive issues and respiratory conditions. "
