Just a reminder to forum members to not leave dogs alone with any hide chews.Daughter came home to find dog had choked on a chew, luckily she turned her upside down and slapped her between the shoulders and it came up.The dog is o.k. and had a check over by the vet,but it gave daughter an almighty scare.Am sure they will be banned from her home from now on.Such a thing has never happened in all the years she has had a dog,so it just goes to show accidents are always waiting to happen. Hide chews have a tendency to go soggy, and can simply slide down the dogs throat.

Glad your daughters dog is OK, thankfully she got back in time to save her dog. I stopped rawhides after that thread on old forum (was it you) about metal in rawhides (from ear tags etc)
Accidents can happen with many objects not just raw hides!! For example, also regularly check toys for wear and tear.

I have seen first hand the risk of dogs choking on hide chews, our dog Amber had a rawhide bone chew about a year ago, she managed to choke on it, luckily she coughed it back up and we were there, it was scary though. As they get all slippery they are in my opinion too much off a risk, so we now stick to raw meaty bones for chewing and no rawhides to be found in our house!!!

My sisters shitzu-website cross had a lucky escape from rawhide bone 2weeks ago, same thing got stuck in the throat and she couldn't breath, luckily they got it out but sister Said it was scarey. In all the years I've never had a problem but I'd never leave mines alone with rawhide

Glad daughter's dog was ok migsy, I never give Earl rawhides; a good stuffed kong, stagbar or tripe bone are the safest options!

I always use them, and I am very happy to continue doing so its each to their own really, everything can be dangerous these days. Glad the dog was OK

Wouldn't dream of leaving Jasper alone with anything except this:-
Don't think he'd be able to choke on that bone even if he does have a big mouth.

Ha ha yeah migsy, he just loves his raw bones. Sometimes my living room looks like an abattoir/butchers. I heard a story today about a bloke who came home and found his poor dog had choked to death on a plastic ball. So it's not just hide bones that can be dangerous but perfectly innocent toys as well. I'm really glad you daughters dog is ok.

Barley can not have rawhide as he gets very aggressive over it and it gives him tummy trouble, never experienced it and don't ever want to

Glad your daughter's dog is ok, Migsy! Good thing she got home when she did.
It seems like everyone's had a bad experience with rawhide. We personally haven't, but we don't get rawhide for our two very often, if ever, and I wouldn't leave them alone with it either. I remember the thread from the old forum too, but can't remember who posted it either.
