It has been just over a week now since Alfie has been with us (time has flied by!). He has been great, and so has Tilly!
We have over come some problems already, though the last few days, he has been doing number twos in the house. He is very good when the doors are open, he takes himself out to the toilet. When the doors are shut, then we take him out regularly. Though a few times he's started to come into the house, then doing a poo. We have started praising him and giving him a treat when he does a number two outside.
Does anyone possibly know why he is doing this? We now have to watch him like a hawk. bectil

I have no expert advice here but I do know Beau can be lazy, when I take him out I tell him.. Go do wee wee's and yes he does, then he trots back towards me, I then say to him again.. Go do wee wee's and he trots off again smelling the ground, pick's his spot and does a poo, all the time I am saying to him do wee wee's, he now knows what is expected of him and when he goes I tell him good boy, he's 6 years old now, but I still have to tell him. My husband does not have the patience to go thru this rigamaroll LOL, then he complains... How come you get him to go, but for me he wont ? So thing is set your own comands and stick with it

We too have set commands, ie, go wee wee, and go poo poo with good results. Not sure about why he's going indoors but it may have something to do with putting down his smell. We went through this with Jasp for a while, but he now understand that if he needs to go to the loo he comes and asks. We have a cat flap and when he was very small he got used to using it and taking himself off into the garden, but its now too small so going to put a bigger one in. Is this something you could do too?

I think that is what we will start doing, scallywag! Tilly know's 'wee wee' on command because of when she use to leak when she was a puppy, though despite having the odd leaking phases, most of the time it is laziness (when she starts licking herself, then I take her straight outside). Thanks for your help bectil

Ah, I see, cazypops! He hasn't scented at all, though have been told that it is because there is a female dog in the house? Jaspers lucky having a cat flap installed! Unfortunately we can not get one for Alfie. bectil

You don't necessarily need 2 different comands, just keep using the words you wish to use, when thay are actually doing what you want them to do so they relate to it, me personally getting hubbie to use 2 different words was next to useless LOL so one word 2 different actions from him LOL, find what works with you

Other half is good with giving both commands and Jasper knows the difference, slightly of topic ( sorry bectil ) but the other day while out on our walk Jasper had a wee then went round the corner cocked his leg on the dog waste bin and had a poo, it was so funny. Contrary dog!

If it has only been a week, then he probably just needs time to settle in properly. Keep on top of it, by continuing what you have been doing and Im sure he will be fine

Maybe you could try teaching Alfie to tell you when he needs to go out? We had to do this with Holly as she was making no attempt to communicate to us that she needed to go out - we taught her to bark if she needed to go out to the garden. (You can also get a bell which they can ring) We also train them to a "busy busy" toileting command, so then if you are taking them out, you know they will have gone if needed. Hope that helps?!

I would go back to puppy training. When they wake, before and after activities, after eating etc. Go out every half hour or if your not about they should go in to a safe area (where it doesn't matter if they go). Teaching to ask to go out can be a hard one. Cooper never barks unless playing or someone comes to the door so when he wants to go out he just stands there and looks at us. If we don't notice he will walk up and down the lounge and then back to the door. I know from a Boston forum this is quite common and a lot of owners have taught their dogs to ring a bell that is attached to the door??? Does that help at all?? Probably not!!

You can get a bell for your dog to ring, called Poochie Bell. From here Our friend actually got one for her dog, it worked, but then he started ringing it all the time as a game! If you wanted to train that, then everytime you go out, ask him to ring the bell before opening the door. They quickly get the idea I found with Bramble, letting her out every 1/2 hour, meant we had very few accidents. Good luck!

Thankyou everyone for your help! AnnaAmber: Thanks for the link! The bell idea is worth considering if he doesn't start to ask to go out once he's settled more. Hahah, oh dear! I can imagine Tilly ringing the bell just to get our attention gladys: I take him outside often and inbetween, I open the door for him to see if he wants to go out and/or I will go out the door first to see if he will follow me. When he does go outside, then I usually wait so I know he's done something and so I can praise him. Tilly is good at asking when she wants to go out. She usually stands next to the back door. Rarely she asks to go out during the night, though the few times she's asked me, she put her head on the side of my bed and whined. It is interesting you saying that.. I suppose we don't really talk about how our dogs ask to go outside on here. bectil

I get Earl to rattle the door beads when he wants to go outside for the toilet.
Have you put lots of work into his toilet training bectil? Even if he is 'good' at toileting outside, he is still fairly new to your family right, and all new dogs need toilet training.
