I think you should be a member to access most areas of a forum to be honest. Most on the forums I go on you can hardly go anywhere without signing in first.

On the rabbit forum I use, you can see everything about rabbits without being a member, so that if someone goes to the site with a problem they can have a read and decide the best course of action without actually joining if they don't wish too. Only 'General Chat' and 'Introduce Yourself' is private.

This was my feeling too, why would someone want to know about someone who has joined if they are only coming on here to see if they can read advice should they have a problem. Photo's are personal to us here on the forum, again why should strangers get to see them, why should they also read our chit chat too which is nothing to do with the pets !!. Poor PP was pouring her heart out Sunday on the live chat, all and sundry could read that, again should that be public to Jo Blogg ? after all she's confiding in members on here, not all and sundry. That's my thoughts anyway's

SW; YES LIVE CHAT SHOULD BE PUBLIC! Could you possibly add that to the poll? I also don't see why non members should see who's just joined the forum if they are not a member anyway! Completely pointless! I chose members only for everything - but then what about those who would like to join the forum and would like to get an idea of what threads are like before they decide is they want to join or not? Maybe we're being a bit to private? You didn't include info threads on your poll scallywag. They should be public, so people can come on here and get some advice if they need it. I'd refuse a forum if I came on looking to be a member and I couldn't view anything! Who knows, when I joined I might dislike it all?!

BT thats why I left all the Info threads / Help threads / Advice threads / etc off the Poll, they should be open to the Public !! it's the things in MY Poll that should possibly be just for forum members to see !! I won't add the chat to it. Sorry. And I havn't asked you to alter any of your Poll's have I

In many ways I think it should be members only, anyone can sign up its free and the only limitation is age (and that's not exactly adhered to!) so if they are interested in a magazine based forum which they will probably find out about via the mags then they can sign up. The more members the better However that's probably not practical and being open advertises itself so its a matter of compromise:- I don't think the off topic matters much as to if it is public. The comps and picture threads should be for members only. Shout box should probably be members only as more personal things are posted there. Is there any way of making any uploaded picture on any thread being limited to members only? Don't know what is the limitations of the filtering!! not that computer minded!!

Caz sadly no, either the entire board is made Private to members only, or open to the public, so Photo's can be made private as can other boards, but for obvious reasons a lot of the boards need to be public for Yourpet's sake

I've placed my votes but I've got a couple of comments. Photography I assume means the current photography board. Obviously members could choose to post photos in other boards that may be public. As to competitions that's a difficult one. On the old YC forum we got a lot of new members when competitions were run - surprise, surprise! However I'm not sure that competitions could/should be limited to members who have posted over a number of posts as the magazine(s) asks people to take art in the competition here, just as it does on facebook (which as I'm not a fb member I can't take part in) & the fb page has linked people to competitions on the forum. If you have to be member to take part in a competition then that might encourage people to take part in the forum but will also mean that quite a few will register for the competition only in which case why not just be a guest? Catch 22? (I've just checked & it looks like the current competition threads do not need you to be registered to reply.) I do have a concern about the shout box being fully public and what is sometimes said in it.
