There is a big black lab cross that I'm sure I've mentioned on here before that is often at the shop downstairs in my building. The shop front is directly next door to our building but there is also a door coming into our hallway.
Last year a new newsagents opened there and the owner had this really aggressive black lab cross who would sit off the lead in the street outside all day. Every time Rosa and I came out our front door it would start snarling and barking, Rosa would immediately get on her back (because she is excellent at dog body language and knows what to do in these situations!) to let it know that she was no threat at all. Unfortunately this dog continues to bark and snarl at her, and even tries to bite her as she lies on the ground, and Rosa can't get away, because any attempt to move makes it much, much worse and it snaps at her more. I have to pick her up just to get her past the thing, and not once has the owner ever come out to help. She just sits and watches, bored. I know it's not just Rosa that this happens to, as my neighbour to,d me today that another neighbour has complained to them as it actually properly attacked her dog. Her dog is actually dog aggressive but is always on the lead so not a problem for Rosa who clears off as soon as she sees it.
Anyway the newsagents shut down much to my delight. The people working there weren't much friendlier than the dog, let's put it that way (when I broke my ankle and got taken out in a wheelchair by two paramedics, one of the workers actually walked right out of the shop and onto the road to stare in the back of the ambulance as I was put in, and next time I saw her went "hahaha, how did you manage to break your ankle in your flat?", and not in a nice jokey way, but in a disgusted "what an idiot" way). So I thought Rosas troubles were over.
Months later though the shop started getting done up for the next shop to be put in there, apparently a make up shop of some sort. Great, the neds are gone. But apparently not, mane when we have walked past some days Rosa has got the fright of her life as the demon dog (and I know it's not the dogs fault, it's the owners, but in Rosas mind this is the demon dog) has appeared in the window of the shop snarling and barking ferociously at her. In fact, she became too scared to go for a pee in her usual spot outside the shop even when the shutters are down over the window.
Then today my man took her down for a pee and sent her back up (we've trained her "go home" where she runs up the stairs to whoever is in the flat, very handy command), but someone came in as she was beginning to go up and she went to see who it was first. My man had waited to make sure she got up fine so he witnessed it as to Rosas horror the demon dog came into our building, off lead of course, not sure the owners even own a dog lead, and went for her. She didn't get attacked, but it was barking at her and she couldn't escape. Eventually she managed to get away and rushed upstairs.
So later on I took her out for a walk and after leaving the building I remembered I had meant to bring a letter with me to post, so I went back for it. Rosa cowered away as we got to our door and tried to stay as far away as possible from it. I called her over and she flopped down onto the ground next to me. She had actually done this yesterday too, I then remembered, as I had found it really odd. She looked extremely reluctant to come inside. Yesterday I had thought she was just annoyed that we had walked past her favourite park without going for a play, and today maybe it was because we had come outside then we're going straight back in. However, later after a big walk, she did exactly the same thing, except she made it look like she was going to go pee in her usual spot. When she did pee, it was only a tiny droplet that she's obviously forced out. It was like she was trying to avoid going in.
Both times today when she did get in, she had really weird body language and kept very low to the ground, she looked really freaked out. Then when I to,d her "go home" (as she usually loves to race home before me and meet me at the door), she absolutely would not, she would go up one flight then lie at the top with her paws hanging over and giving me the biggest most depressed looking puppy eyes I've ever seen, then as I went to go up the next flight she would stay as long as possible at the previous flight until I called her after me.
I can't figure out what's wrong, whether it's to do with the aggressive dog or something else. She is acting like she's terrified of coming into our building, and she's a very confident dog.
We saw loads of other dogs today and she was great with all of them except the last one we saw who kept pestering her and trying to air hump her (he was much too small to actually achieve it). She was lying with her back to him, having already got on her back, and he was ignoring all her body language telling him to go away, so she snapped towards him a couple of times, a stronger way of saying "get lost" which still didn't have an affect, but I told her "hoi!" when she snapped and so she just lay and ignored him after that. She's a good dog haha.
Oh, and when we were on our walk another super aggressive dog came flying out at us from under a chair, thankfully on lead. Everyone was laughing and the owner seemed to find it funny, grr.
So basically I am confused about what is up with Rosa, and annoyed that seemingly no one else bothers to socialise their dogs here (okay, most people do haha)!! A well socialised dog knows dog body language and acts accordingly. Rosa is a dog body language pro, but she keeps meeting dogs which she must think are foreign or something because they certainly aren't speaking the same language as her and they aren't understanding or paying attention to any of her signals.
And why don't people keep aggressive dogs at least on leads?! The black lab cross especially should not be off lead, no one can get down the street without incident!
Grrrrrrr!!!! And poor Rosa
