cazypops Ahh I thought you meant, in your original post, that it reminded you of where Flirts' had been not a reminder of the abscess itself - I thought Flirts had had another one - I remember the cheek one

Well the vet survived , it was a different one but one we know well, but poor Roman is feeling rather sore I suspect. He was so well behaved (Roman that is!) only the odd flinch & "ouch" as he was shaved & had several punctures in the abscess (4 I think!) along with squeezing the contents out! There's still quite a lump & he's on more antibiotics & Loxicom & another vet appointment for Tuesday morning. I've also to massage the area (to get more out/encourage it to decrease) & keep it clean. Who turned the weather sunny & warm - that must add insult to injury to a cat that likes the outdoors! I saw the other cat we think was involved in our garden very late last night - it wasn't limping (mind you neither is Roman) so hopefully its OK. When I tapped on a window it stopped staring at the bird feeder & left. Its certainly a big boy, I think bigger/more solid than Roman & Osiris. Here's a couple of pics since we got him home - shaved & punctured 2015_04_02 P1030486 by osiriscat, on Flickr Cuddling toy & showing abscess after some draining 2015_04_02 P1030489 by osiriscat, on Flickr Of course he's taken a liking to one of Osiris's birthday toys ( a herbal rather than catnip one) so Osiris has had to give it up - there's another stored away but he wasn't so keen on this one as the catnip one so that's OK

And that is down in size lotsofcats, what came out wasn't nice at all = it really must have been very sore to start with & he didn't complain at all! & you're right he won't be out until after the vet's visit on Tuesday at the earliest. He's going to be really stir crazy by then thanks cia

Aww, love the second picture there. Hope he starts to feel better soon and that the lump continues to go down. I think the lump initially growing when he started the medication is often more just the body working on healing it. Like when You break a bone, it swells up around it as your body starts working on fixing the problem, or in this case, fighting any infection. Not always the case but certainly often so.

I think that puts it better than I did smilesbetter when trying to describe what the vet said on our visit after we'd seen the lump - it was the medication working along with the body. Thanks for the get well wishes everyone

cazypops, Unfortunately its not fully drained just as much as they could easily get out of the 4 puncture holes - just needle size holes. I think after 4 there was a balance regarding the discomfort in having more & further draining. The antibiotics & Loxicom should help get rid of the rest along with the massage! Its weird feeling it move (almost slop around) as I massage!

Sounds yucky - when Kai Ruki had an abscess the antibiotics got rid of it and it didn't need to be drained thank goodness.

We should think ourselves lucky when Flirts had he abscess, coz it didn't just burst it exploded and ALL the gunk came out at once. It must be horrid having to massage it to get some more out. I'm surprised they only did puncture holes to drain it instead of lancing it.

lotsofcats & cazypops, I'm not sure why it was not fully lanced but it could be that to do that it might have needed sedation as it was so large & we were at a branch surgery (only open until 10:00 a.m. & again in the evening), rather than the hospital, with Easter just about to start. Also several puncture holes spread over the abscess may have been better As it was starting to go down slightly already, that may also have influenced the decision. We're not getting anything out as the punctures are sort of healed but I think the massage is to encourage it to dissipate. It was quite warm (almost hot) to the touch yesterday but cooler today.

As long as it's still going down, that's the main thing. x
