By the time I took Roman to the vets he still hadn't done any more poo & at one point when I saw him standing I thought I saw a lump on his shoulder but couldn't tell. Anyway saw Austin (the vet) again & yes he has a lump soft on the lower part & hard up on the top. It runs from the point of his shoulder up to the top near his spine & is painful at the top end when touched. The vet reckons that's where the bite is that's caused all the trouble - & I think I've now found the site - & was not noticeable when we took him in on Saturday but now that the meds are working & they are affecting the abscess. Sounds odd that it is more noticeable now with the meds but I understood when the vet explained can't get the words quite right here. Roman's eyes are much better & we can stop the drops - hurrah! However we're to continue with the rest of the meds & if the swelling is not improved by the end to go back, then he changed that to if not better by Thursday to go back. the meds finish at the end of Thursday but as its Easter better to be safe than sorry. If he's still got a problems then they'll have to drain the abscess. I've taken some pictures but not sure they really show the lump but have marked it on this one Roman shoulder swelling 2015_03_30 P1030472 edited by osiriscat, on Flickr Although big it is masked by his fur & you have to be looking at the right angle to see it, it definitely wasn't sollen like that yesterday. No wonder he didn't jump up for his kibble overnight or on to the top of the chair back - although he has gone up on the chair back now. What's amazing is that he isn't limping! Of course he is now not constipated - we've had 2 deposits since the vets, one immediately we got back & the last being of normal Roman size & stink! Perhaps the thermometer did the trick!!! His temperature is now 38.2 so much better. Oh & no charge from the vet We've a feeling that this is the other half of the arguement - don't know if it's a stray although it looks healthy but we saw it earlier last year when it strolling down our close limping for a few weeks. No collar & has been wandering around the area again including our garden! Mark did see Roman fighting with a black cat a month or so ago further down the road but couldn't really see the cat. This one is distinctive as it has a white marking wrapping round one leg like a ribbon (can't really see it in the picture). Visiting tom? 2015_03_19 P1030435 by osiriscat, on Flickr Hope the other cat involved in the fight is OK, if it this one we haven't seen it since before Saturday but it only was an in frequent visitor.

The lump doesn't appear to be going down yet so have this feeling that we might be back at the vets on Thursday as its only 37/38 hours before I'll have to phone them to make an appointment.! Despite his injuries which aren't necessarily that frequent but he doesn't do things by halves , I wouldn't want to keep him in permanently as he is used to the outdoor world (even before we got him). Its been a case of all our cats, when we got them, were used to being outdoors so as we added more it became more difficult to confine them & although a run or garden containment would be a possible halfway house I don't think they, especially Roman & Osiris, would be happy having had all the freedom. Things have changed here since we first got him & there are more outdoor cats around which I think is part of the problem.

Poor Roman What you describe makes perfect sense. Cat bite injuries can be quite nasty and the resulting infection difficult to resolve. Interesting that you mentioned the eyes being affected and in particular the third eyelid showing. Obviously in Roman's case his eye issue could be the the direct result of an injury, but often in both dogs and cats a third eyelid showing can be a sign of systemic disease. In other words, it can be a symptom of something else going on within the body ie viral, infection, immune related (allergies) and so on.

Oh dear, that lump reminds me of the one our Flirts had the other week. We were lucky that it burst after 24 hours on anti biotics. Hope he's feeling better soon.

In other words, it can be a symptom of something else going on within the body ie viral, infection, immune related (allergies) and so on. Roman says thank you for your sympathy, gypsy We can now see what looks like a very small patch of bruising, although may well be a healing scratch mark, on the flat edge of his lower eyelid. However he definitely has an infection so it could well have just been that, although would he have had a discharge from the eye in that case? When the vet pressed around one eye the 3rd eyelid closed & he said that was just a reaction to what he was doing but with the one it was already partially across so a different reaction from each eye. Perhaps in his case a mix of injury & infection - as I said he doesn't do things by half. As I said to the vet he is prone to abscesses if he gets wounded. Useful information, thanks, as I knew that the third eyelid was used to protect the eye but not that it was a sign of systemic disease, though that makes sense in a way. In the wild if they weren't well, they may want to automatically protect their eyes. cazypops, poor Flirts, glad it healed quickly. Had he been fighting?

Good that Roman's wound has now been spotted and he is being treated. When is Roman being let out again? The culprit is a lovely looking tom -butter wouldn't melt in his mouth!

Thanks lotsofcats Roman won't be let out until he's finished all his meds - which he currently does Thursday - & his abscess has gone. Could well depend what happens Thursday as if he needs to go back to the vets he may well be having more meds. Also with a sore shoulder I'd hate him to meet the other half of the battle! I agree it is a lovely looking tom - reminds me & Ajax very much of her stray Gordon - who is now a permanent resident in her garden pens & even comes in to the conservatory - she even managed to catch him & got him neutered last year (he was visiting her garden when I 1st joined the old forum in 2011 ! )

Oh, I remember Gordon! I'm amazed that Ajax managed to get him neutered - that's good news as he must be more settled now, especially as he even goes in the conservatory.

Yes it healed within a few days. We're not sure if he had been fighting but suspect that it was the result of an ear infection. Flirts produces and inordinate amount of earwax and Chris (the vet) thought that the ducts in his ear could have blocked, so he was given eardrops along with antibiotics, and he's now a lot better. Hope things goes ok at the vets tomorrow.

cazypops, That's a quite a distance away from Flirts ear if its where Roman's is! I remember Roman had an abscess in his ear. When I saw the fluid coming out of his ear when he got home once I had heart failure as my human First Aid training kicked in & I remember straw coloured fluid from the ear is a sign of skull damage! I felt a fool rushing him in to the vets only to find it was a burst abscess mind you Roman must have been relieved that it burst & he was getting treatment! I think this abscess may well be going down now but if it hasn't fully gone I'll get him back to the vets in case he needs his meds for longer.
