Oliver had his boosters yesterday and after serious discussions regarding the FeLV jab (which I wasn't keen on them both having), I asked the vet to give Oliver his Advocate pipette as it is so difficult to give it to both him and Callie. BIG MISTAKE!!!! Got home and Callie was very quiet for a few hours and then last night they had the most horrendous fight. It must be that Oliver doesn't smell like himself to her. I could kick myself for not realising this would happen. It is so sad to see as they loved each other so much and Oliver doesn't know what he has done wrong. They have just had another fight and I have had to separate them. I have plugged in the Feliways and used the sprays too. I have rubbed their coats to get their scents on each other. I can only hope that once the smell of the Advocate has worn off Callie will accept Oliver. I just feel awful that I caused this.

Very sad to hear this, hopefully things will return to normal once Oliver's unusual smell has gone away. You could try rubbing a towel or something on Callie, or taking one from where she's been sleeping, and rub it on Oliver a bit, apparently that's what they do when returning a young cat to the litter as the mum might reject it if it smells funny.

Don't worry too much about this - I'm sure that as soon as the smell wears off they will be back to loving each other. You are doing the right thing by rubbing their coats to get their scents mixed. My 2 youngest, Blackberry and Willow have terrible fights if one of them smells a bit different - a couple of hours later they love each other again. Let us know how they are.

I'm sure they'll be fine once the alien smell disappears
Why were you not keen on the FeLV booster being done? Is there some side effect or brand to avoid?

Why were you not keen on the FeLV booster being done? Is there some side effect or brand to avoid? I stopped Molly's FeLV as I considered it unnecessary as she gave up any interest in going out when she was 6 and when I lost her brother Max she became an only cat and as FeLV is only caught by direct contact with another cat, I was keen to stop it as each time she had the jab she developed a lump and these things can turn nasty. Oliver also developed a lump and he has only had one jab so far!!!! The vet did it this time and they did Callie's last month before I had the chance to say no. There is now research saying that the jab itself has little effect in protecting the cat anyway. I don't know if that is true but I personally am not keen on my two having anymore, especially as they don't go out.

I would not have my lot done if Toffee didn't go out and about - I'm always afraid they will pick up something from him even though he doesn't mix with the indoor cats. He goes up to them when they are in the pen and he is outside and kisses Blackberry, Willow, Bramble and Kali - the big flirt!

Oh dear - poor Ollie. You did what you thought was right as a responsible owner Andrena. I would be like yourself and also be very critical of myself. I guess from Callie and Ollies point of view - no one actually told them what was happening - because we cant, thus she made the right decision is reacting the way she did to a foreign scent, smell. Their strongest sense is their nose not their eyes like us. Im sure if your patient and give them time to settle then business as usual should resume in the next few days, week. Give them time - its not out call - but theirs. As for the vaccine debate - thats totally your choice to make and i fully understand your argument against them. We all have a choice and sometimes having a choice causes us much confusion. Take care and i hope Callie and Ollie resume duties and very soon. xx

I am not against all the boosters everyone - I am ok about them having the cat flu and feline enteritis boosters each year as they are both very contagious. It is only the FeLV (leukaemia) booster that I feel is not necessary for my 2.
Thank you all for your lovely comments of concern.

You did what any responsible pet owner would do, it's not your fault that they fought, most cats do fight when one comes in smelling of the vet (I remember when Ebony had to go to the vet Tom would have a hiss at her and wouldn't have anything at all to do with her until the smell had worn off), for some reason Ebony was fine with Tom smelling of the vet though ......

puddycats, Sorry to hear that Callie took a dislike to Ollie's new smell - it might not be the Advocate but the boosters she'd smelling as she'd be more used to the Advocate & she won't have smelt the booster on Ollie before as I presume his were done before you got him last year or even just the vet smell. Hopefully they'll soon sort themselves out. But whatever you don't blame yourself it can happen with cats As to the FeLv booster I can quote understand why you don't need it. Our vet gives it as ours are outdoor cats & there are areas around here where it is prevalent but your 2 are indoor cats. Having the other 2 vacs are a good idea just in case you ever need a cattery or someone else to look after them. Of course it could be a reaction to the injection itself rather than a particular vaccine that gave Ollie a lump. Roman has had a lump on the odd occasion but it's not every time, the others are fine.

Wow what an extreme reaction. I hope things have calmed down now. Must be very stressful and upsetting for everyone.
