I've owned two tortoises but lost one when they woke up to early from hibernation (not sure of all the details as I was young) Then other I had from a small baby and was gorgeous ickle thing but got bladder stones and died. I would love another but I don't feel there is enough info out there to help me look after them correctly. toby1 I've read about fridge hibernation but worry about what would happen with power cuts??

Gladys it takes an incredible amount of energy for a tortoise to come out of hibernation. If the temp has been going up and down during his sleep he will have used up vital reserves, therefore the waking process can prove very dangerous. This is why fridge hibernation is safe. Power cuts arent a problem really if you check on the fridge daily. Heres some information on safe hibernation. pottyaboutpets.proboards.com/thread/12188/hibernation

My grandparents have two tortoises. They had them since my dad was a child. We might be taking them on soon

Thats great news. Good luck with them. We've been lucky with the weather lately and our Mediterranean tort has been able to stay out, Our Leopard Tortoise is still indoor though.
