It would be interesting to know just how popular tortoises are as pets. Do any of you own a tortoise? Here's our video on tortoise care, and you can also visit www.yourtortoise.co.uk for more in-depth information

Hiya. I've not watched the video as I'm on my ickle laptop and it's being a bit slow today but I have owned 2 tortoises. But my first which I had growing up woke up to early during winter and died aged 7 or 8. My second was an ickle baby one, no bigger than 50p called george. He developed kidney stones and died. I would love to own one again and have looked in to it many times but I don't want to lose another. A neighbor of my parents still has his tortoise, which is where I go my love of them from. The tortoise is huge and must be over 40 years old now.

We had a sulcata tortoise, just gone to a home with a female this year. I miss him like mad but he will be in great company so I'm happier for him. Tortoises are naively very popular as pets, people don't realise the care they need and get a lot of things wrong causing digestion and shell problems not to mention the above of hibernation for specific species. They are not IMO good 'pets' once you have it right they're easy but that takes time and dedication and a lot more room than people think I personally love the sulcata best, their personality is amazing, they're fantastic intelligent, cute, friendly, dopey, bashful and excitable, koopa troopa was an absolute star and such a pleasure to own but I would definitely not recommend sullys to many lol!

I've got a tortoise called Tom, he's just a baby, about 12 And despite what people say about tortoises being slow he's rapid, and despise his size one of my dogs is terrified of him!

Haha, when he's in the garden it's so funny, the dogs go close and when his head pops out the dogs scarper. When he moves towards them they run away and hide. Big pansys!

I think the most important thing apart from diet is to not keep them in Vivs, shops will still have owners doing this. Safe hibernation is important as well, denying hibernation can cause serious long term problems and the safest form of hibernation is Fridge hibernation. Temp can easily be controlled this way.
