Did anyone watch Rolfs Animal Clinic tonight? There was a Springer Spaniel which was in real danger of dying because it was scratching its self to death. It was awful to watch,as you could see the distress in the poor dogs eyes. The vet said the scratching causes pain, which dog feels is better than the itching,so very sad.(sad too to think of foxes suffering from it without chance of help.) Thankfully they eventually found a solution, but it had an horrific smell when used. The dog looked so much better,it's terrible raw skin was healing at last. The problem turned out to be fox scabies, something I have never heard of.I know it's possible for dogs to catch mange from foxes, which used to worry me greatly at one time, as Skip used to roll in fox poo. I am so glad I didn't know about this when Skip had his awful itch problem a few years ago or I would have been in a total panic,it was distressing enough to witness.Luckily his was sorted out with a couple of steroid injections from our vet,but they had no impact on the poor dog on the t.v. prog.

I didn't see the episode last night, but I did see it when it was on a while ago! We recorded it as it was when Pepper was itching and scratching a lot, but she was nowhere near as bad as that poor dog was! I was glad that the solution worked for the poor thing. I bet the smell was worth it for the dog's owners.
