Last monday (15/4/13) Hoddy tripped over her toy whilst playing. She limped for a couple of steps then carried on playing. We went to agility and she was her normal self. On wednesday, she suddenly pulled up whilst running and was limping. After about a minute, she stopped and I took her home. I have kept her quiet inside the house since. Today though, she suddenly started crying and holding her foot up. Again, after about a minute, she was fine. The leg isn't swollen at all and there is no heat around the joints. There is nothing in the paw and I can move her leg without any bother. She is walking normally. Any ideas? We ran the vet and they think it is a sprain, and because she isnt in severe pain, there isn't much point taking her for an emergency appointment. We have a big agility competition in a few weeks, so Id like her t be fit for that. What can I do to help the healing?

I think you mean her carpus or wrist?
Could be a strain or sprain, and ice will help as will rest, I would personally see the vet to ensure it is not something else such as a broken toe etc.

I agree that you should definately take her to see the vet just to get it checked over.
Its most likely a sprain or strain, and will not take forever to heal to health again.
Ask your agility trainer what he/she thinks about you competing. I know it would be a huge dissapointment if you were not to do it... but think about the dog. I do think she will recover, however.

Oh smokeybear beat me to it. I would go check it out at the vets. Cooper hurt his foot, he only limped occasionally but I took him anyway. I think it was a strain, so we had no walks for a week or two and no play and then slowly introduced more activities and all is good now. *touchwood*

Jasper sometimes goes lame on his front leg and even though he wasn't in a lot of pain (he wasn't yelping/whining etc) they said it could have been a hairline fracture and we arranged an X-ray. Fortunately it was just soft tissue damage but better to know that it wasn't fractured. Hope Hoddy's alright

Also for the agility our vet recommends us to rest Jasper for 10 days then slowly introduce exercise again so if it's 3-4 weeks away then you should have time to heal her and reintroduce. However talk to the vet about it as the jumping could weaken the joint again if it's already weak.

Ooh that was it, soft tissue damage!!! Yeah rest for 10 ish days and then slowly build up the exercise. But I would go to the vets to be sure.

Took her to the vet and after a quick examination, was told it was a mild grade one sprain. Completly rested for a few days, then building up walking distance. Has been much brighter in the past week, so is definitely feeling better, and has returned to her usual amount of off lead exercise, with no issues whatsoever. She had last week off agility training, and after speaking to my trainer, she is going to return to training tomorrow. Being fairly light for her height, as whippets generally are, the vet agrees that she should be fine, but to only jump at a low height Have also invested in some joint supplements, just as a preventative measure Thanks for all the advice!
