I have recently inherited a 3 year old, bitch terrier. When she is walking on a lead and sees another dog , she greets it in a friendly manner initially, sniffing happily but this only last for a few seconds, even when the other dog is friendly and placid towards her, before she snaps at it. I have no idea what the problem is or how to cure it. Any help gratefully received!

Hi If your dog is initially friendly, I would let her sniff the other dog for 2 seconds and then get her away from the other dog and reward her with a treat. This way she won't snap at the other dog and is rewarded for being friendly. If this works, gradually build up the time so she is interacting with the other dog for longer and being friendly before you intervene and reward.

Excellent advice milliepup04.
Just to elaborate on the idea behind the short greeting - the dog does not get the chance to get wound up and to explode. And as we know the more a dog practices good behaviours for which he gets rewarded the more he will perform those behaviours. Thus the unwanted behaviours will be replaced with what we want.
End of lecture. LOL.

She looks so like my much loved dog, Terry.
