Hey there swoots , welcome to the forum! Looking forward to hearing all about you, Sooty & Sweep. I live in Germany with my two house cats (live in a block of flats so no way really they could go out) and puppy, and also have two other cats and a family dog who live with my parents in Scotland. I've been getting my two house cats, Carlotta & Mieze, used to wearing a harness and hope to eventually train them to walk on a harness. Like you, the traffic here can be quite bad, so I'd worry about having them outdoors without me. Sad to hear about your two cats that died because of the traffic! That must have been awful

Hi Swoots *waves* I'm Gill, married to Neil and we are both owned by two furry dictators aka Chilli and Lily....the infamous Lily Chilli is around 2 years old now, found by a friend living in a shrubbery, eventually enticed indoors and spayed and she now lives with us. She's the longhair black & white in the pic below and is an absolute angel....can do no wrong in my eyes She's pretty shy with Neil - possibly because she lived with only females for her first 18 months - but she's starting to relax with him now that she's realised how harmless and doting a slave he really is Lily on the other paw...well, she's politely referred to as That Naughty Kitten She came to us a week after Chilli in November 2013 at 11 weeks old. I work in a newsagent and a customer had two kittens for sale and as soon as I saw the ad (on a card to go in our window) I gave her the £20 and said ''I'll take one!'' I popped up to hers an hour later when I finished work and then had the nightmare choice of choosing between two girls (boy was sold otherwise he would have come home with me) - a black or tabby & white. I ended up having to do a meeny-mino-mo And so tabby & white Lily came home to us. And there's not a day doesn't go by that she doesn't have me laughing at her antics as she has SO much personality and bond with me Neither of my girls go out and, for now, I'm happy to have them that way as in the past I've lost two cats on the not-very-busy road outside our courtyard Hopefully one day we'll be able to move somewhere where there's no road close by or even have a garden that we can put a pen into or enclose so the cats cannot get out. I've always had cats since the age of 9 (I'm 46 now) and Neil discovered the joy of them in 1997 when we met and I moved in with my boy Felix Since 2009 we did longterm fostering of old cats for a local charity - the cats that had various illnesses so nobody would adopt them...they just came to our 'retirement home' Over the 4 years we had ten wonderful characters and our final two were Suzi and George who had Feline Leukaemia Virus and sadly passed to Rainbow Bridge in June and October 2013 Losing these two to a preventable disease hurt so much that we decided to take a break from having cats until after our summer holiday in 2014. We lasted TWO WEEKS!!!!!!! The house was too quiet without a feline and that's how I came to adopt Chilli and then Lily I'm getting quite broody for another youngster now but he'll have to be a ginger boy.....so watch this space Anyway, I'll shut up now...I can talk for England when it comes to animals Would LOVE to hear more about Sooty and Sweep....and yourself of course Have you always had cats since childhood or were you, like Neil, a latecomer to their enchantment? I love dogs too but unfortunately my two girls don't *little horrors!!!* so I cannot have a dog for the time being It's heartbreaking but having my two girls miserable is not an option I can live with Their welfare and happiness has to come first every time Lily: Don't look at her....look at ME!!!!! Chilli: Insufferable brat - I'm going to duff you up now!!!

Hello all Swoots here I am Mum to Sooty and Sweep who you know are brothers a little about my two boys. Back in 2012 my youngest son told us about a friend of his who he works with mentioned that a stray cat had given birth in her garage and that she was looking for homes and would any one be interested. Sooty and Sweep were two of five that were born. 3 black and white boys , one tabby boy and one tabby girl. No idea what pecking order they came out and no idea when they were actually born so we opted for 15 th May for them. We actually fetched them in the July. I can remember fetching them from around the back of my son's friends house and putting them in the cat box to bring them home. I will look some photos out and hopefully post them , thank goodness for digital cameras that is all I can say. Sadly as I mentioned before the two tabbies that my son's friend kept sorry for the mix up.we didn't have them we did look at having the two tabbies but ended up with our two. I wouldn't be with out them. I am home all day not through choice and it gets lonely on ones own so I talk to them all the time. The last time we had cats was around 25 years ago we had 4 cats Susie a tabby, Bubbles also a tabby, Cammy who was a pure bred Persian and Georgie Porgie a black and white moggie with long fur who I bottle fed my self. They were all out door cats but they all caught cat flu and sadly died. It was heart breaking we were advised not to have any more cats for at least 5 years. Now we have these two who we named before we even saw them in the flesh and what fun they are, Sweep is who we call the naughty one my is he naughty. Sooty is the quieter of the two and looks at Sweep and he must think is this really my brother. I have got lots to ask if I may and look forward to getting to know you all and your pets. Can I also thank scallywag for all her help Thanks scallywag

My husbands family originate from Scotland it is somewhere that I have always wanted to visit may be one day who knows. I wouldn't even entertain trying to put a harness on my two as I have a feeling they well I really mean Sweep would some how escape from the harness. I would love to put a run on my back garden but alas am unable to. Smilesbetter the two that were killed were not my cats but all the same they were siblings to my two and it is upsetting it really is. I often say to mine as they look out of the window, you know why I cant let you out its so dangerous out there. I must admit I do feel guilty sometimes but I am sure like yours they are loved and have plenty to keep themselves happy.

Chilli: Insufferable brat - I'm going to duff you up now!!! Hi Gill I see your cats are as different as my two Sweep is the naughty one for sure where as youhave to coax Sooty to do things. I had to my hubby treats Sweep like a baby he even carries him as if he is a baby. In fact the cats get more attention than I do so I have thought of getting a fur coat black and white of course. I may get some attention then I can only but try. I was told that it was cruel to keep cats as house cats but I know full well they would not be here now if they were not. There are only two rooms that they are allowed in the back bedroom and bathroom when i am in there other wise they are banned. I find it very strange that when my son comes they dont bother and yet when other people call they hide. My son held them when they were little and i still feel that cats are not daft and they remember. i have lots to tell and could chat all day also Swoots

Lily tends to run and hide whenever strangers call around too Chilli is more laid back and just observes them from her bed but if they made any advances to her I think she too would scarper off to the bedroom We don't really have many folk visiting so the only folks the cats tend to meet are ones in white coats sticking needles into them Thankfully both are now fully vaccinated so not due back until March 2015 but Lily will be getting spayed later this month as she's now a nice size Her mother Rhumba was barely a kitten herself when she gave birth last August and I always felt Lily was so small for her age that I've put off her spay (which I'd normally get done at around 5 or 6 months old) until I felt she was big enough....which she is now She'll be 11 months old on 9th July and is FINALLY looking more adult than teeny-tiny kitten....tho' she still acts like a crazy kitten Little monkey was swinging hallway up the living room curtains this afternoon I hate having my girls indoors all the time but couldn't bear to lose them, or have them injured, on the road so until we find somewhere safer it's an indoor life for them. They have access to all rooms (bedroom, bathroom, living room & kitchen) and love charging up and down the stairs in their mad half hour sessions I'm forever looking for new toys for them to play with so they don't get bored and they seem happy enough

Hi again swoots, its been nice to hear a bit more about Sooty & Sweep. I've never had a cat from a kitten. I was brought up with a dog Labrador or Dalmatian) in the home. When I left home I didn't have the suitable surroundings & time for a dog When we moved in here in 2000, next door had a cat who was used to coming into our house as the previous occupants had children who played with next doors. After a few years she adopted us (won't go into the full story but we are still on good terms with the neighbours), my first introduction to cat servanthood although my husband had cats as a child. Chloe was quite ill in early 2006 and didn't go out for a while & when she recovered she had lost her confidence & territory and didn't go out so much although she had always enjoyed being out. In 2007 we wondered if getting another cat would help regain her territory for her & eventually found the Roman at the rescue & brought him home in October 2007. Again it was a case of he adopted us, I don't think we had any choice at the rescue! He was about 3 years old & she was 17 but although he initially tried to play when she said "no" he obeyed her They got on all right & were comfortable but not close cats. Sadly she started going downhill at the end of 2007, having to have injections to start her eating again and towards the end of January 2008 the vet suggested the time had come Chloe aged 14 2005-04-16 laptop cat cropped_0108 by osiriscat, on Flickr Aged 16 2007-05-20 In the garden_241 by osiriscat, on Flickr Her final day aged just short of 18 2008-01-22 PICT0053 by osiriscat, on Flickr Roman at the rescue the day we decided to get him aged about 3 20070922_1713 by osiriscat, on Flickr The first day we brought him home 20071011_0253 firstday by osiriscat, on Flickr and now aged about 10 P1020766 by osiriscat, on Flickr Roman seemed to be lonely so we looked at getting another cat but found us choosing a pair Penny then nearly 9 & Osiris nearly 2 20080322 In conservatory_85 by osiriscat, on Flickr PICT0080 by osiriscat, on Flickr and now Penny aged 15 20140428 P1020610 by osiriscat, on Flickr Osiris aged 8 P1020841 by osiriscat, on Flickr Then in 2012 there was a cry for help rehoming a number of cats from a forum member & as I was now retired we took one aged about 2.5 years - Lexie 20120229_DSCF1911 by osiriscat, on Flickr and 2 years on Lexie stealing Penny's bed 20140311 P1020450 by osiriscat, on Flickr this wasn't our most sensible idea and even 2 years on the other 3 don't really accept her, it varies from tolerates to hates but we & they have found their ways to deal with it. Sorry seem to have overloaded your thread, hope you don't mind

Just gone 4.30 am yes am in the swoot household.
I don't mind tonib I love pictures of cats. Cant wait to post some of mine you will so love them well I love them anyway that is all that matters.
I am going to try and get back off to sleep I think Sooty and Sweep are spider hunting again. I hate spiders what makes me laugh is when they do come across one they have no idea what to do with it. They sit there watching it then I come along and spoil their fun.
No idea if anyone is up at this time of the morning I doubt it but who knows.

Okay scallywag I have just seen this so are we all up now or not.
just waiting for the cats breakfast to warm up after it has been in the fridge. I use cat tinned food and dry biscuits as I was throwing a lot away. I am looking forward to sharing ideas with you all on what you do with different things such has feeding, cutting nails etc.
Best cat litter but saying that I doubt I can change which one mine uses not after two years anyway.
I have a feeling scallywag will be helping me to start a new thread. I do hope you have a lot of patience because you sure are going to need it.
I am going to go and look at some photos of mine ready so that I don't keep scallywag waiting so watch this space or another one.
Well I am sure you will find us somewhere. it is weird talking to a screen that is for sure.
