Oscar has been retching all this morning but nothing is coming up, he's eating fine and has been out so he seems fine apart from this weird retching. Is it best to just keep an eye on him? He's not been sick or anything yet.

jess, Do you think Oscar has been grooming himself quite a bit - if so he could have a hairball, which usually comes up eventually (sometimes clears by going the other way!) its quite distressing to see them retching like that - we've got one who gets them. When it does come up she can often be very generous by spreading the results over a number of places. One thing that can be of help to pass the hairball is Katalax as it helps lubricate the route & soften the solid part. Warning it is a laxative but we have used it for both purposes in the past with success. Its not cheap, the cheapest I found was Animed Direct at £9.65 I think someone else on the forum uses a different product. One question is Oscar passing stools OK? If he's constipated as well then I might be inclined to speak to a vet for advice if this continues for more than a couple of days, as there could be a blockage. It might also help to feed wet food (if you don't already)

If Oscar is eating fine I wouldn't bee too worried. Perhaps it is a hairball as tonib suggests. One of my cats, Toffee, was retching once but he wasn't eating so I took him to the vet who gave him an anaesthetic and checked his throat for anything stuck there - couldn't find anything and the next day he was as right as rain!
Keep an eye on Oscar and if it continues give the vet a call and ask what it could be.

He has been grooming a lot recently but in the 10 years we've had him I've never actually seen him sick up a hairball (strange I know) unless he does it outside. Like you said, I'm not too worried as his character and eating habits are normally but if he's still like this tomorrow I might ring the vets. Thank you both!

jess sounds like a hair all. My cat. Mieze sometimes does this, but eventually seems to manage to digest it or something because I don't often see actual hair balls around (unless she's been hiding them under my bed, oh gosh...). If it's still going on tomorrow though you should maybe call the vets and ask whether you should bring him in or not.

smilesbetter - 3rd July not June! Strangely our Penny decided to do this 4th July morning - phelgm in bedroom, en-suite, dining-room & living-room! She was certainly generous. She also had a rather loose stool - at one point she was on the litter & wretching over the side!!! She felt sorry for herself all day & is now Ok but with no trace of a hairball or more loose stools! Goodness knows what it was. Hope Oscar's Ok jess

After 2 days, he stopped retching and has returned back to normal! Must've been a hairball, so we've given him a good brush to hopefully reduce them! Thanks everyone
