Our male cat has returned home after 2 weeks away. Well we did get him back after 10 days away but he escaped out of the catflap by lifting the flap inwards! He has been found in the same place as before and we have brought him home.
We need tips on how to get him to settle in and not return to the place 1/2 a mile down the road! He has definitely been fed whilst he was away as he seems bigger! To be honest I'm taking him to the vet to get his chip scanned to ensure it is him!
Any advice will be appreciated, he is currently in the cat carrier meowing whilst we decide how to approach this!! We have a female cat too who was quite getting used to being the only cat, she won't be too pleased to see him!!

I can only suggest that you keep the cat flap locked so he can't get it opened, and while he's under house arrest you give him lot's and lot's of attention, cuddles and tip bits so he doesn't want to go anywhere else when he is allowed out again. When we moved house this is what we did with one of our cats who likes to be outside so that he understood that this was his new home, it worked for us. Welcome to the forum mummyemmy hope you enjoy it here we're a friendly lot.

Welcome back to the forum mummyemmy hope we can help you. By the way how did it go with your 14 year old last year? As you've got 2 cats it does make it a bit awkward as I presume that your female also goes out. Apologies if this seems a silly question but I presume that both your cats are neutered. As cazypops said fully locking the catflap (both in & out) would be the best answer but that would mean that your other cat would be forced to stay in. If that's not an option then have you got a spare room that he could use as his (complete with litter tray, food, water, toys, his bed etc.) while your female is out for a period of time. When you let him out do it just before mealtimes so that he hopefully will want to come home quickly for food & also give him treats (whatever he likes best) when he does come home. Also when he does go out put a collar on that says "please do not feed me I have a home" or similar wording. I think you can get them online. On another thought we have a cat that likes to roam so we have bought the Loc8tor ( www.loc8tor.com - we went for the Loc8tor Plus as it has a bigger range but the Loc8tor Pet is just as good) & this helps us find him if we do want to bring him home before he wants to. It only has limited range so you need to get an idea of where he goes but it helps & our cats have got used to coming to us when they are found as the tag on their collar beeps as well as the handheld locator. In fact our wanderer always seems pleased to see us - its like he's pleased we have made the effort to find him & then he wants a taxi home!
