We have a slight issue with barley, in the fact that at least once a month he will cut his paw(s), now it started of with the ocassional cut here and there, nothing serious but they seem to be getting more common and deeper each time, and he does not complain about them, so we dont know that he has cut his paw until either an infection has started and it really hurts him or it is dripping blood everywhere, we have though of boots as an option to ending this, but dont know wether that would be good for long term, its not just his pads being cut but also the flesh in between his pads and toes, there is no shapr objects in out garden even though he still manages to cut them so how, and we avoid walking him where there is broken glass, but no matter how careful we are he still manages to cut them, any advice would be welcome

Hi puppypal, You don't have to get Barley boots that would get in the way of his walking etc, you could just get some small slip on shoes for Barley to stop his paws getting too irritated by the ground. There ARE smaller shoes for dogs that 'boots' for dogs. Make sure you keep his paws clean, and check them regularly

SOunds like his pads are soft...walk him on concrete or hard ground to toughen the skin up. I would not go down the boots route just yet...harder skin is harder to cut...my dogs pads are beginning to get rougher now...walking in snow and on grass all winter their pads do soften but hard pads are needed for walking on hot pavements in summer

Maybe they are cracking because they are dry..you could try some cream to keep them moisturized something like Protecta-Pad cream might help, also make sure you bandage them so that he doesn't lick it off.

I would have personally thought that harder pads would be easier to crack, being more hard and more stiff than softer pads, which would be more bouncy and not as brittle... but then again, you learn something every da, don't you.

not to good at the moment, he is not limping so that is a good sign but the wound is still open and has not scabbed over, he has been wearing his boot when out on walks and at the show yesterday, it is still very red and weepy, it looks like trip to the vet for antibiotics at this rate as it is not healing, i noticed it on thursday, but he could have done it before then because i only noticed it when he started to lick his paw, but when i looked there was no blood but just a cut, it was strange at the fact that there was no blood, looking at it this morning it is quite deep, but it would be to late for the vets to stitch it now, will just have to wait and see Rubyroo11 it is not his pads that are being cut it is the flesh inbetween his pads most of the time also any tips for things to deter him from chewing his bandage/ boot when it is on his foot, lemon does not work as he seems to like the taste of lemon (strange dog), lavender does work but he really hates the smell of it and will not settle down, he can chew it with his 'cone of shame on' we do have a muzzle but i feel cruel for putting a muzzle on him
