I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on how to help stop Amber being scared/reactive to loud noises. So, Bernese can naturally be a wary breed. But Amber is quite scared of loud noises and busy environments sometimes and I'd like to change that (if I can...) OK, so one of the things she hates is the sound when you open a bottle of fizzy drink, and then the fizzy sound it makes. Whenever she sees you take a bottle out of the fridge she runs to the front door to try and get out the house. She won't come back into the kitchen until about half an hour after the bottle is gone. She has other noises she is scared of, loud and sudden crashes, bangs and loud noises (luckily we are out in the country so don't have any fireworks at Halloween because they would freak her out) Once she is scared, she ignores any treats to try and settle her. She just tries to bolt. Sometimes she's scared of stuff that I don't even know what it's about. It's something, I know, but hardly anything....! And I think she's beginning to become more wary of stuff generally. One day we tried to walk her in town and she hated it, got spooked and tried to run across the road. So it was dangerous. I thought of getting a CD to play her the noise quietly, and then build up to louder noises. What do you think? Thanks in advance

Hi Anna,
I'm not a dog expert but I know that for cats there's a lot of advice about firework noise in particular. A product called zyklene is sometimes recommended & we've used for one of our cats as a calming aid in an integrating issue. I'm not suggesting that you use this for Amber although they do have a dog variant. However the last 2 times I bought it I got a CD for just what you want so have 2 copies.
I'd be happy to send one to you (I'm aware from your profile that you're in Ireland) if you pm me your address. I'm not sure of your age so if you are under 16 please ask your parents before providing that information.

A CD sounds like a good idea - gentle music, and quite to start with. You could try getting a fizzy drink bottle out and placing it on the floor whilst Amber is not in the room/house at that time. She could be out in the back yard whilst you do this, not looking in at you through windows/transparant doors etc. Then, when she comes in, leave the room and let her react to the bottle. Don't open it, or fizz it at all, just leave it, soundless. She might then realize its not always scary and loud! Maybe, just don't take her into town for a while? Then gradually go out and about again. You can buy calming collars and blankets and coats etc so you might want to try and get one of them for Amber Best of luck

If you get a CD, make sure you take it slowly and go up one notch at a time. Start it off so that you can't even hear it, because Amber will be able to hear it. If she doesn't react, then you can move up a notch. For the louder volumes, only go up once she stops reacting. I'm sure that some people would recommend Adaptil too. The only experience I've had of this is when we brought Ellie home from Dogs Trust, she had an Adaptil collar on and if I'm honest, it didn't seem to have any effect whatsoever. The room plug ins might be more effective though. There's also things like Dorwest's Scullcap & Valerian tablets that are supposed to be very good. However, they might be an expensive choice due to Amber's size. I bought some to try and help Ellie with her travel sickness, but the directions state that you should give 1 tablet per 5kg of bodyweight, and as Ellie weighs 18kg, that's 3 tablets each time. But they also do a liquid Valerian compound which acts quicker and might be more cost effective. www.dorwest.com/Category/Nerves-and-PhobiasThere could also be something like Bach Flower Essences that could help, but I can't remember which would be best for a fearful dog.
