Help! My neighbour has just decided to let her 2, 1 year old cats out of the house as they were previously house cats. My dog, who was initially just curious about them has now developed a fear of them (with a wee bit of fear aggression towards them). This has come from them clawing / hissing at him through the fence when he gets too close. The other day they were both in my garden and my neighbour said I should let Willis out to run at them so they would know not to come into the garden. I reluctantly did this. To my horror they stood their ground and after a lot of hissing and clawing, they jumped over the fence. They've since continued to come into the garden (whether willis is there or not) quite a few times and now Willis is too scared to go out without me. When I am with him in the garden he sits on my feet and stares into next door incase the cats are there. He's really not a happy boy (ear back all the time when I leave the door open). My neighbours seem to think its funny because Willis is quite a big Shepherd mix. Any advice? Basically - how do rebuild his confidence in the garden (he wont play or anything)? and also keep the cats out my garden? They don't seem to have any fear at all (I also hate cats!). And yes...I know letting him run at the cats the other day was a really bad idea.

Cats hate water,so get a water pistol.I do this when cats are lying in wait to pounce on the birds. You can't harm them by doing this, and hopefully they will leave your garden and dog out of bounds. It was actually quite a good idea from your neighbour,as cats usually scarper from a dog running up the garden, these cats are obviously quite bold.

Thats a good idea. I might get a hose :-) I think I'll put trellis up as well so their paws can't come through the fence (I can see Willis getting bad scratch one day).

Trellis is a good idea too.One of our late dogs never learned cats didn't want to be friends with him, dopey Spaniel often got a bloody nose as a result.

We had a lot of trouble with one of our neighbour's cats. He lives with a Staffy and a JRT, so is completely unafraid of dogs. But he really doesn't like the hosepipe and we've got to the point now that if he's sat on our shed roof, or just outside our gate, we just have to pick the hosepipe up and he takes off. I've never squirted him, but the water going near him is enough to make him go away. He used to come to our garden daily and meow outside the door, but he hasn't been for a long time now, which we're glad of as his presence torments the dogs. We daren't let them out either as he's getting older and isn't as fast as he used to be and Ellie is very likely to catch him now.
