Hi Everyone.
Thought I'd share this with you all. A month ago I took my 2 year old Labrador for her yearly booster shots. When I got to the vets they explained that her boosters were changed for this year and included a new vaccine for Lepto, they explained it wouldn't cost any extra so naturally I went along with it. Two days later my dog collapsed in the kitchen, she was off her food, off her water, couldn't walk a few steps without flopping down and when I touched her stomach she bit me. I rushed her back down to my vets who said it couldn't possibly be related to the vaccine as the timescale was too late. They said she had an inflammed stomach and a infection. They gave her antibiotics, painkillers, antisickness shot as well as tablets to bring home. All for the tune of £150 On Tuesday I took her for her 4 week follow up booster and once again today she's collapsed with the exact same symptoms as before. By now I was furious. Went straight to the vets (luckilly our vet is brilliant) and told me to give her all these medications and he agreed that as it's happened again it is related to the vaccine, most likely a severe allergic reaction.
He's put it on her notes that she's not to have that vaccine again. I'm furious. I'm contacting the head office and will be seeking legal advice as I think it's scandalous £300 to treat something caused by a vaccine in the first place.
So just warning anyone else who's getting boosters to be wary and if your dog has it please watch them carefully for any unusual symptoms upto 48 hours after the vaccinations.

Sorry to hear about your dog.
Please get your vet to report ' a suspected adverse reaction to vaccine' to the vaccine manufacturers. They need to know. And I have known people who got the cost of the subsequent treatment back from the vaccine manufacturers.

I don't vaccinate my dogs, but this just is horrific Your dog isn't the first I've heard have a reaction and won't be the last either sadly. Definitely try to get your vet to report an adverse reaction to the vet.

It's not very often you hear of a dog being allergic to vaccinations, but your experience must have been terrifying. Many years ago when my Cocker Spaniel had his first injections,he was allergic to something in the vaccine, his muzzle became very swollen, and when I rang the vet and was asked to describe his face,I could only describe it as looking like a hippopotamus!

Like zahada said could you tell us the make of the vaccine as this will help us make sure we don't have that one given to our dogs, Thanks.

That is absolutely terrible. Like others have said please let us all know the brand and name of the specific vaccine as then we can make sure that we are not putting our dogs at risk in anyway.
Though I am slightly confused. You say you went for your yearly booster and then 4 weeks later back for another shot. Does this mean that your vaccinations had actually lapsed (at my vets I think its anything over 14 months from last booster) and therefore you had to start the full vaccination process again?

Hi Everyone.
Just checked the vaccination card it's the Nobivac L4. The new Lepto one has to be started as a new course as it covers a new strain of Lepto so you have one with your usual boosters then a follow up Lepto shot 4 weeks later.
I was talking with my neighbour earlier and her cat has been ill since she had her yearly boosters. She's going to ask what boosters her cats had as she's never been ill before.
Thankyou all for your concern Phoenix is still getting over it, 4 days of pain now but I'm giving her all the medication to keep her comfortable. It's horrific to watch her suffering.

I wonder if it's a live vaccination or not. Some of the live ones can have funny effects as the dog essentially beats a tiny amount of the virus to build an immunity. But if that was the case with this one he should have been okay after the boosters I'd have thought. I don't actually know which are live or not, I just know rabies (needed in Germany where I live) is not a live one.
I'll have to check whether Rosa has had this. She's getting three rounds of vacs for some reason but I think she's only getting the rabies one on our next visit. My vet won't tell me anything so who knows!

My little Yorkshire terrier had the lepto 4 vaccine in may, she suffered terribly for 5 months with severe seizures, blindness and crying all the time. On Thursday she had a seizure that lasted half an hour and she didn't know who i was for ages. On Friday i decided to let her go as she was in so much pain. I feel so guilty for letting her have the vaccine. I miss her terribly. Please think before giving your dog this vaccine especially little ones.

So sorry to hear about your loss lauriejeanette.
Have you and/or your vet reported back to the vaccine company as to the fact that your terrier had fits as result of the vaccine and it has lead to you having to say goodbye to her?
Without this feedback the problems of the vaccine are not known and vets can not make decisions as to how safe it is to use.
