So Harry has started to randomly cock his leg around the house and pee!! Argh!! There hasn't been any other dog in the house recently so its not that. Ive no idea why he is doing it or how to stop him from doing it. He appears to understand when Im giving him into trouble as sometimes he will go and sulk somewhere but other times its more of a teenage "what?" Kind of look.
Any ideas what could have started him doing this? And how to stop it?

Hormones probably started it as he'll be getting to that age and scent marking. Especially seeing as he shares with another boy. Probably go back to house training basics and clean with a non-ammonia based cleaner as that wil attract back. It is not dominance related, in my opinion as dominance theory is a load of bull

I think dominance thing isn't bull, haha, but I don't think that's the cause of this as I don't think it's why dogs scent mark. He's probably just at the age that male dogs feel the need to start marking their territory, you need to start training him not to. I've never had a male dog so I can't offer any advice other than don't worry about it being a health or any other kind of problem, it's natural for male dogs to do this and without owner training they will continue to do it. Unless he's actually having a wee, then it's totally separate from toilet training as scenting is different from weeing, it's not that he NEEDS to go, more he just wants to leave his scent there so that he can protect his territory. You will need to train him to at least only do this outside. I have a friend whose dog ALWAYS scents on my couch so I beg you, while training him out of this habit don't just do it at your own home but also in other people's and in other indoor places so that he learns it is an outside only thing. Good luck and hopefully someone with male dogs can give you better advice!

bubbles87; has Harry been neutered? Earl has never done that, and he was neutered. However he doesn't share his house with any other dogs as of yet, never mind another male. Earl will however, mark his territory A LOT when out walking. Cocking his leg here, squatting there, and something hardly ANYTHING comes out! That is typical scenting. Does Harry do a proper pee when showing this behaviour, or is it just a few dribbles? Outdoors where Earl scents is where a lot of dogs walk I am sure, including other males, so he squats to mark his territory over them. He doesn't squat in the garden however, because it is only him there. If he has a dog-pal over and they pee in the garden, he WILL scent. It's most likely a dog-over-dog reaction, especially at his age, for Harry, and its completely normal. I agree with Charlotte when she says go back to basis. Harry should grow out of this as he matures; don't panic; it won't last for long! HTH

From what I have read and heard they should do. Again, I said he 'should' grow out of it because it isn't for definite, and it is only my opinion and findings that have lead me to that possible answer. I am sure it varies from dog to dog like most things do.

Is it not slightly different when another dog enters a different house? They're more likely to scent, especially if there are/have been other dogs in there before - my two have scented in my grandmas house (shh, she doesn't know that! ), as she has two other dogs. Tilly's I know was deffenertly a scent, as she was matter of feet away from me and it was only a small bit.

Think my point is made bectil Male dogs scent mark up things and that includes inappropriate places! Totally natural thing and in circumstances like coming into my house or going into your grandmothers they will do it. I know males who will scent mark in their own home if another dog visits. May add the dog coming into my house was neutered as an adult so neautering made no difference to him. Must say that females scent mark too but never had any of the female dogs I have owned or been brought up with, or extended family have owned, or any friends female dogs, that would go into another persons house and scent mark. Impression I get from some posts is that Harry will grow out of it. As this is not a toileting issue par-se I have my doubts! I agree with charlottte's post about cleaning up thoroughly to discourage further scent marking. This hopefully along with trying to catch him before he does the deed to tell him not to will work in stopping the behavior in the house. Sorry I dont have any advice for bubbles87 as I dont own males. Wish you lots of luck sorting it though

Do they grow out of it BorderTerrier? Guess no one told my friends dog when he visited mine ~ 3yrs old at the time!! Marked up numerous things around my house!! My aunt's dog is 6 and he has to wear a nappy round my house, and in his own when we visit with Alfie! They have known each other since they were about 12 weeks and there is no stopping him. Alfie has never done this. The only difference between the two of them is that Alfie has been neutered and theirs hasn't.

That's what my Aunt's dog has to wear SarahHound! Although she makes them herself (shows just how bad her problem is when she's had to make about a dozen!) It should be able to fix with consistent training - go back to young puppy training and watch him like a hawk!

In my experience (not just with dogs) most habits get stronger as time passes. They are not grown out of. Just think of kids who suck their thumbs as babies and still do it when they go to school. What about nail biters? Hard habit to grow out of. Smoking?
Bad habits are best not allowed to continue and alternative (good) habits should be taught.
As for marking - tether the dog to you when you can't watch him and do not allow him to start the sniffing ritual which leads to the marking. Increase exercise and mental stimulation, feed from interactive toys. And as already mentioned, throughly clean all marked area with an appropriate (enzymatic) cleaner.
With consistency you should break this habit. And of course, watch your other youngster so that he doesn't start. Good luck.

I thought you said your Aunt's dog wears a nappy? It's a similar version, just like a male nappy. Perhaps she didn't know they have a name - belly bands! I think they are more common in the US.
