Yesterday when I stroked the top of Lexie's head I found a cat claw sheath in the fur - no idea if it was her's or another cats although thin it might have been a bit broader than hers. A bit later I saw a red spot on her front leg (stood out as she is white haired). She was fine on the leg & I had difficulty seeing it as she was very fidgety and it was close to the top. Managed to clean the smallish area & it didn't look too bad but with a slight loose flap of skin & hair.
However when Mark came home & was able to hold her while I had a good look I realised that it was deeper than I first thought as I could see the next layer of flesh.
Rang the vets this morning & choose to take her to the hospital surgery at 9:35 a.m. rather than the slightly nearer local branches. Glad I did, although clean it is a bit deep. I had 2 choices
General anaesthetic with a clean our tidy up & stitches with the risks of the general to be taken into account
No anaesthetic & just stapled which could mean that it still might not the general work later depending how it healed
She hadn't been starved overnight but she'd only had access to a maximum of 19g dried in that period & not eaten all of it. But the vet said it takes about 3 hours for food to go through the stomach so they could operate later in the afternoon & it would be a brief procedure & she'd be carefully monitored & possibly given an anti-nausea med beforehand.
Well I decided to take the risk as it would mean it was well cleaned & a better chance of healing. So she's stayed in & I'll find out more around 3 pm. Whilst she's under they'll clip her claws as well.
She'll need to be kept in for another 10 days - oh she won't enjoy that after the last incarceration recently. Probably with a bandage & tape rather than a collar but Lexie with a collar fills me with dread - calm is not her strong point!!! Probably no more meds than those given while she's there (they will give her antibiotic injection along with an anti-inflammatory, although they have said as we have Metacam for Penny perhaps 2 days of that just to ease any pain after the op.
Fingers crossed everything goes OK. Just love to know how she got the wound.
