As if I didn't have enough to worry about with Milo, I noticed that Finn started limping on his walk. I looked at his foot to check for anything stuck in it and noticed that the top layers of skin have gone from his pads at some points and they're pink instead of black. I washed it off when we got home and then noticed that it's on ALL of his paws It's causing him quite a bit of discomfort while walking, although he's very good at home and doesn't bother at it. I'll post a picture of it later when I have my phone on me, just in case anyone has any other ideas about what it could be. We're thinking it might have been the road salt :\ They've been going really crazy with it here recently, even though there's been no ice or even risk of it. I REALLY hate that stuff! Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for any paw wax, or even better, little booties that he could wear? Probably not something that a lot of people have had to invest in, but I thought I'd try asking anyway!

I use paw wax for Riley's pads, i have done for quite a while,he has some of you know Riley has issues with hard floors/laminated, it helps him from slipping, but it is also good for the salt and the grit on the roads, i would reccomend it, although to treat sore paws you may need to use a little vaseline first.

Does sound like road salt. Washing feet after walk sounds like a sensible idea. I have never used the wax etc so sorry cant help on that front I do have boots which I used after my monster seriously damaged one of her nails and got a severe foot infection. www.ruffwear.co.uk/dog-gear/dog-boots/summit-trextm-new The company does more than one boot and tbh I went for cheaper due to budget. Worked for me at the time but would not want to use all the time. A friend was using boots on her dog regularly but found they rubbed too much She reverted to baby kids socks!!

What wax does everyone use? Have seen good reviews for Musher's Secret. I did have a look at those boots and similar ones but I can't afford to spend that much I'd probably have to get those little plastic things... can't see him being overjoyed about wearing them!

Poor Finn. I agree that it is most likely road salt, however sometimes after a lot of exercise (especially on concrete or other hard, brittle surfaces), Earl's pads show a bit of pink and are softer than their usual tough skin. A good but gentle wash of every paw after a walk will hopefully help. I agree about using Vaseline. You don' have to use a specific paw wax - Vaseline works too! With Earl, boots wouldn't work as he just wouldn't walk in them happily and it would ruin his walk experience! However Finn may be OK with them on. If he is still limping when walking, give him a rest and let his paws heal up again. It will go him good.

Poor Finn! I haven't ever experienced this kind of thing, but I do have some paw wax in the house. I just bought the one that you can get from P@H, but not sure what it's called. It hasn't been used much so I can't really comment on how well it works. If you go for boots, I find that these ones work quite well - www.petplanet.co.uk/product_group.asp?dept_id=5850&pg_id=2828They're not too heavy, and don't fit too tightly. They're also tough, so they won't wear through quickly. Pepper tends to drag her toes and when she had one on, it lasted a good few walks before any damage shows.

Just get a few pairs of the cheaper wool ones. They have a non slip paw print on the bottom so will last walks and if you had a few pairs you can rinse them out after every walk. I notice on ebay someone was selling them really cheap, you could probably get 3 or 4 sets for £10 if you had a search around.
