Hi everyone, I've been having trouble with Ginger, he's roughly 18 years old. Last August he had a turn and pooped everywhere, ever since then he hasn't been the same. He had diarrhea but I put him back on steroids that were for his over reactive immune system and he perked up for a while, his poop became more solid and I got him back -mentally- for a brief time. He doesn't seem to move his tail, and going through the runny poop stage it was continuously getting covered, as well the rest of him but his tail always seems to be the worst. But my main concern for him at the moment is that he goes to sleep in his water bowl and wakes up choking and coughing, I hate to see him in this state. I feel like I lost him that August, when I look into his eyes they seem vacant... I wondered if there was anything I could do for him or whether it was time to say goodbye. Thanks Razz x

Hi Razz, sorry to hear about Ginger. I don't know what to suggest. What did the vets say about what happened to him in august?

Poor Ginger - it's hard to know what to do for the best. Ask yourself "do you think he is happy as he is, is he suffering, is he eating okay? and ask your vet what quality of life he/she feels Ginger has. Keep us informed, we are here to support you and whatever your decision is.

I'm no expert but my first thought was a stroke in August & it is quite possible that this is connected, thinking of how I've seen older humans who've had strokes & recovered partially but then later gradually deteriorate over the years. I think lotsofcats has given really good advise & I would speak to your vet - there could be another reason entirely.

Hi everyone,
Thankyou for all the support. I spoke to the vet today and they believe that it's his time. They believe that his kidneys are going to go, I understand that I can't let him die naturally as he would be in a great deal of pain and I don't want that for him... So unfortunately as much as it rips my heart apart, Ginger will be leaving me 7th Jan, the appointment is at 6:10pm. I hate to see my gorgeous old man go, but looking at him earlier he couldn't lie down without me helping him.
Razz x

Oh Razz, I'm so sorry to hear this but it does sound like the vet is right but only you will know. I suspect Ginger will be getting lots of treats & cuddles in the next hours to celebrate his long life. It's the hardest decision to make but it is the last act of love we can make for our pets. Take care. We will be thinking of you tomorrow.

I've fostered a few oldies in the past four years and it IS heartbreaking to say goodbye but in Ginger's case it DOES sound like the right thing to do (((HUGS))) Spoil him rotten today with treats and cuddles and then this evening be brave and stay with your wee man and tell him how wonderful he is as he slips away (((HUGS))) We're all here for you hun (((BIG HUGS)))

Hi Everyone, My handsome little man passed away at 9:00 this morning, he died peacefully in his sleep. Although I feel as if someone has ripped my heart out and everytime I think of him a flood warning is posted in my area, I am glad he went the way he did - peacefully and surrounded by his family. I hope the links work below but I posted some pictures of how he should be remembered, strong, slightly chubby and handsome. <3 R.I.P my gorgeous little man. Razz x

Oh Razz thanks for posting the photo's must have been very hard for you ? Don't know what to say to you. Nothing will comfort you for your loss right now, but it was a blessing you did not have to make that Journey to the vets. Thinking of you BIG {{{HUG}}} from me R.I.P Ginger out of pain and Young again As much as I loved the life we had and all the times we played, I was so very tired and knew my time on earth would fade. I saw a wondrous image then of a place that's trouble-free Where all of us can meet again to spend eternity.
I saw the most beautiful Rainbow, and on the other side Were meadows rich and beautiful -- lush and green and wide! And running through the meadows as far as the eye could see Were animals of every sort as healthy as could be! My own tired, failing body was fresh and healed and new And I wanted to go run with them, but I had something left to do.
I needed to reach out to you, to tell you I'm alright That this place is truly wonderful, then a bright Glow pierced the night. T'was the Glow of many Candles shining bright and strong and bold And I knew then that it held your love in its brilliant shades of gold.
For although we may not be together in the way we used to be, We are still connected by a cord no eye can see. So whenever you need to find me, we're never far apart If you look beyond the Rainbow and listen with your heart
