Hi
My name is Jo and we own a 2 year old chocolate colour point British shorthair cat called Ollie. We suspect he could have an enemy as recently since he has been allowed out a bit (under as much supervision as you can give to a cat) he has come back with weird smelling oily almond stuff on his neck? This has happened twice now, does anyone know what it could be? It's very string smelling and clear that it has been sprayed on to him somehow. We know most of our immediate neighbours and they welcome him but would be interested to hear if anyone else has similar experiences or if you know what this sweet, oily liquid almond could be?
kind Regards
Jo and Shaun ( high wycombe, Bucks

The smell of almonds is usually associated with cyanide. But I doubt many people have access to it. I would definitely speak to the vet - most vets have access to '24 hour poison information service' so should be able to give you the answers.

Could be an essential oil! Some are toxic to animals. When did this happen and how is Ollie?

My first thought was perhaps essential oil, then wondered if cat could be crawling into an area where the substance could be leaking.I would certainly pop into the vets with your cat as they will be the best to recognize the smell.Very worrying for you,I hope there is an innocent explanation.

If you think its an essential oil and it's almond then it should be ok. Almond oil is a carrier oil not an essential oil. This means it's the oil you use to dilute essential oils in, and only harmful if your cat is allergic to nuts. Has he shown any adverse effects?

Is it only on his neck or does it get on to the top of his head? Could he be brushing against something or poking his head into somewhere which is transferring the oily substance on to him?
As others have said has he had any reaction to it & also a word with the vets may well be a good idea.

Thanks for the replies . Thankfully Ollie' is fine. We are sure he got it outside which rules out essential oils. We do know the link between the almond smells and cyanide which worried us a lot as Ollie seems to like going into a neighbours garden 2 doors down where I know the 2 old guys who live there hate cats! Also he got a canine tooth practically knocked out and not even the vet can figure out how that happened. The trouble is how do you keep a cat out of someone's garden!

It was removed and now he's fine. Hopefully no more funny smelling oil on his neck!

My cat fell out of a tree once and landed kind of on his paws/chin and managed to chip his fang. As for your neighbour not liking cats and the strange oil - one would be careful to watch your cats movements for a few weeks just incase your neighbour is the up to no good. Cats are our responsability are unfortunately not every shares our affections with them. I hope your cats ok now.

Hopefully tabitha9762 there'll be no more oil but a cia said keep an eye on him, as I'm sure you would. Hope you'll come on here again, even if you don't have a problem for us to solve

How very worrying. Glad Ollie seems unaffected though.
