Hello everyone I've been looking for a good cat forum for a while and found this! Not sure WHY it took me so long to sign up though as I read the magazine every month!!! I'm Gill, married to fellow cat-lover Neil and we live in rural Northumberland. We are owned by two young cats - 1 year old Chilli and 4 month old Lily They have been with us eight weeks and seven weeks respectively and brought so much laughter to our home after our previous boy George went to Rainbow Bridge in early October For the past 4 years we have been doing long-term fostering for old and terminally ill cats for a local charity....basically just running an Old Cat's Home The cats would come to us and be spoilt rotten until it was time for them to go to Rainbow Bridge. We've taken on 10 over the past four years, some staying just weeks until their illness became too much and others, like wonderful Grumpy Old Tortie Misty, were with us 14 wonderful months. Our last two, George & Suzi, had Feline Leukaemia Virus (FeLV) and were with us 9 months and 13 months before the virus reared it's ugly head and we had to let them go to the Bridge We are now taking a break from the fostering as we both feel emotionally wrung out (especially after losing George & Suzi to a preventable disease!!! ) and we HAD planned to wait until summer 2014 before even thinking about having another cat......but the house was too quiet so I put a few feelers out and heard about Chilli needing a home and she came home in mid-October She was followed a week later by Lily.....or Hurricane Lill as we call her I'm sure in the coming weeks I'll tell you all more about our foster babies and current sweethearts.....off to explore the rest of the site now xxx

Oh, where are my manners? ?? Photos!!!!! After a hiss & spitty start (on kitten Lily's part as she was spooked by this big black cat!!!) both girls are now best mates and play and snuggle up together. Chilli is black & white semi-longhair and Lily tabby & white. Peek-a-boo!

Welcome to forum @gillykat, hope you enjoy it here What a lovely thing to do to foster older, ill cats but no wonder you feel so wrung out. A pair of youngsters will certainly brighten (& cause chaos to) the future Looking forward to hearing more of your life with cats. By the way I'm Toni with 4 rescue cats aged between 4 & 14. Oh by the way don't feel you have to stick to the cat area, there's often interesting topics in other areas. I've learnt quite a bit about dog ownership & how its changed (or not) since my parents had dogs when I was a child. The topics often cross over - I saw you response on the breeding thread & oddly there had been something in the dog section on the changes in breeds for good or bad over the years. If you need any help with the forum don't hesitate to ask, we all had a learning curve when we started Edit: Just seen your photos they are lovely

Aww thank you for the lovely welcome See, I KNEW this forum would be a nice one I'm hoping to get a dog next year too as I love ALL animals. Hubby wants a border collie and I DO adore the breed...but am also mulling over other breeds like whippet (we've had two in the past) and jack russell My last dog passed away in August 2008 and I've felt lost without a canine companion since then. Unfortunately I was working fulltime after losing Tina and it's only been this year that I've changed jobs and now only work part-time (either morning or afternoon, 4hr shifts, three days a week) so got LOADS of time to care for a dog properly. Hardest part is CHOOSING a breed as I want a companion who enjoys walks....a dog I can take to dog club and do a bit of fun obedience & agility with...a dog that can come on holiday around UK with us....and, most importantly, a breed that will NOT be on first-name terms with my vets as my various old cats were Hubby Neil and I will be happy with a rescue adult as long as they are 100% ok with the cats but, realistically, think it's gonna be a puppy. Plus, I think Chilli will be more accepting of a youngster as she will be able to safely watch her from up high and when pup is in her crate

Welcome to the forum Gill. Your cats Chilli and Lily are lovely. Well done for fostering old and ill cats and giving them some love in their last months - must be rewarding but heartbreaking too.
I'm Jenny and I have 7 cats and 2 dogs. My oldest cat was a rescue feral kitten, 2 others were strays, 2 were kittens of one of the strays and 2 are Maine Coons.
I look forward to hearing more about Chilli and Lily.

It is lovely having all types of pets in one place. I had all manner of animals when I was a child (just about everything except tropical fish and a pony!) so cannot understand how anyone can prefer one species over another. Cats give me certain things that dogs cannot and vice versa....if I had my way I'd have a mixed household of at least two/three of each
