Scruffts

After watching scruffts at earls court the other week I wonder if the results are somehow manipulated ? For a start the "judges" were a young man and woman from Nuts magazine , how does this have a bearing on judging a dog ? At least they could have had someone remotely connected to dogs , there were many qualified judges manning the discover dogs stalls. And when reading the profiles of the group winners it does seem unusual that all of the dogs had a sob story to tell ? Illness abandonment etc, that pulled them through a tough time. There was a rescue crossbreed class and a worthy winner of that class , but all the other winners have a story ? How about the ordinary family dog bought as a puppy and loved by that family. It does seem a little biased to me. Anyone else think the same. ??

puppypal is probably best to answer this. She should be able to comment on how Scrufts is judged as she was in final this year at crufts

Sorry caz2golden i was trying to avoid this thread as much as possible, and hoped that no me dragged me into it. littlestar i was one of the finalists of last years scruffts, three out of the four dogs in the final had a 'sob' story. The judging at the final was rushed and was not done properly, james wellbeloved the sponsors of it was appalled at how they ran the final, as to start of with none of the scruffts final dogs had any benching areas, and we arrived at 8 am and we were not due in the show ring until 6pm, so a long wait, there was a lot of talk about not running the final live as they were running behind, so that lead to us not being judged properly. All but one dog was announced wrong, the judge didnt know what dog was what and announced the winner wrong, as she thought that it was the golden oldie but it was the prettiest bitch that she had chosen. It was an extremely stressful experience that i never want to go through again especially with barley as he did not like being there, it was too crowded and noisy for him and there was dog everywhere, and he is not the smallest of dogs to squeeze through small gaps. the judge for the final last year was pat st clemant who has nothing to do with dogs, the judge for our semi final was one of the top dog models finalists and i think the other person was the editor of your dog magazine, but i can't say for sure. Yes it is biased, as it is very hard to judge a crossbreed dog. Our story was a 'sob'story as barley was a rescue and he has helped me through some very tough times and he is a very special boy, but i also have to say that he is a very handsome boy as well.

Pat St Clement has done a lot of work with dogs and rescue dogs, and is a great dog lover, so I don't understand your comment that she has nothing to do with dogs!
But it does seem to be quite poorly run otherwise. What has Nuts magazine got to do with dogs?!

That's what I thought badly run , if they want people to compete in the heats all over the country at least they can get it right , it's not as if it's the first year. Who organises it anyway ? Might write letter of complaint. And I will say now my daughters dog was in the semi final , no sob story just a crossbreed pup bought on the cheap for a young family. But he was wound up before they got in the ring waiting for nearly an hour standing around, and it was late going in, they didn't enjoy the experience at all.

I have been to discover dogs twice for scruffts, both times were horrible, the heats were never on time, there was also some no friendly dogs in one of our class's. But it all depends on the judge and what the judge likes, both times we used the same story, one time it struck gold the other it didn't. Judging crossbreeds and fun dog classes is always biased on what the judge likes. Just keep trying, it all depends on the judge, barley can enter 4 of the 6 classes, so he has 4 chance to get to the final, but we are not competing in childs best friend again as he has already one that, but he can also go in handsome dog, rescue and good citizenship as he has got his bronze and silver award and working towards his gold.

I have noticed that sometimes it can depend on what the judge likes, not what is actually the best, if you understand? That is why I like agility competitions. All done on time. Fair. EDIT: But mainly I like agility shows because I love doing agility with Earl And we still enter other shows, just keep my tip in mind.

I don't want to get involved in this thread as everyone has - and is entitled to - their own thoughts on the outcome of these competitions ( and EVERYONE always takes home the best dog with them anyway ) but if it was such "a stressful experience that I never want to go through it again..... especially with Barley as he didn't like being there .... etc" why continue to enter with him?

Because the money we pay to go in the classes goes to a charity. 2. He will never get to the final again as he has already been there, and his photo is the one being used to advertise scruffts 3. And that was at crufts, he has been to discover dogs twice and he was fine there, but crufts was a lot bigger and more crowded. It was a lot for him to take in, and he found it hard, especially as he had no place that he could benched so he could sleep and relax a little.

1) You could still donate to charity.
2) You do not know that he will not get through to Crufts in a different category.
3) " I have been to Discover Dogs twice, both times were horrible.....etc" !!!! and then you say Barley was fine.
I'm not going to get into an argument about who does what with their dogs 'cos as I said "EVERYONE takes the BEST dog home with them".....rosettes/ prizes or whatever.

Hello 'Littlestar' - I was thinking about this thread last night and would like to apologise to you for going completely off topic.
In answer to your question, I think that it is just the luck of the draw as to who wins these competitions as it seems to depend on what "type" of dog the judge likes. If they go for cute/ cuddly/ fluffy ones or big/hairy/ugly ones then it is likely that they would chose a dog of that ilk. Yes, sometimes the 'sob' story may be an influence but not always. ( Both my rescues have done well on occasion but been completely disregarded on others.)

Of course it is completely down to what the judge likes the look of - isn't that the same for any dog show? What bugged me was the fact that there were dogs there who looked like Pedigrees, and some wonderful crosses of all different shapes and sizes. Yet the dog who looked the closest to Pedigree was chosen as the winner?
