Hi guys
Wondered if anyone could give me some hope. My 10 year old Silver Tabby Merlin went for a rountine tooth extraction. After the op he seemed ok ate food, was responsive and his happy self. He came home and seemed ok. Came in from work on Wednesday and he lying on his back and unresponsive. I picked him up and put him on his feet and he seemed dazed and unsteady. He just wanted to stay in one position. Took him back to the vets and she did his blood pressue, temperature and did tests on his eyesight. She couldnt give me anything definitive. It is now plainly obvious that he cannot see. I have read that if he suffered some sort of trauma or seizure his eyesight could return. It is heartbreaking to see as he was such an outdoor bold cat and now it is so sad and he seems so depressed. My other fear is that is it fair to keep him going when his life has changed so much. Thank you anyone. x

So sorry about your Silver Tabby jasmin, you must be devastated.Did the vet give you any feed back as to what may be going on? Hopefully things may be as you read, and improve, but you must be so very worried and distressed.I feel your vet should have given you more information, unless of course you were too stressed to take it all in. I hope things go well for him,but as all pet owners will understand, you only want the best for him,so wouldn't want him to suffer if his condition won't improve.

Hi, sorry if this duplicates!! she gave me scenarios but nothing committed. I cannot understand how after the op he was fine then this. I just need to know what happened and if he will get better. I am not sure whether he can see anything, he walks round the walls! but he did walk under my dog this morning! He is so sad and he wont really eat or drink. Just wanders around with his head on the floor. This is killing me.x

So sorry you're going through this with Merlin. Can you maybe go to another vet for a second opinion?

So sorry for you and your cat, what a horrible thing to have happened. I would take him back to see another vet or even get one to come out on a house call as something must be done, especially if he is not eating or drinking, bless him - he will go downhill fast if he doesn't. Make sure to talk to him and pet him a lot to try to calm him down. If there is a chance that Merlin will recover then I would keep him going and see what happens. Good luck with the vets, I will be thinking of you.

Thanks everyone. My friend has just gone in to see him and he is not good. I understand that if he cannot see he will be depressed but i need to know what has happened to him. Its so heartbreaking to see him like it. I dont want to make the ultimate decision but also I know they can recover their eyesight. Hard decision x

Still think you need to see a vet urgently jasmin12 if only just to get an injection to stop him dehydrating etc

My heart goes out to you, this must be horribly distressing and stressful for you both. Perhaps have a look at the following site - they used to be the Feline Advisory Bureau www.icatcare.org/. My only thought was that perhaps the extraction has pulled on the optic nerve somehow. Perhaps this has been very traumatic and getting a diffuser will help. I've recently go the Pet Remedy one from Amazon, www.amazon.co.uk/Pet-Remedy-Natural-De-Stress-Diffuser/dp/B0043QPL4W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1385126705&sr=8-1&keywords=pet+remedyI think a second opinion may be useful. Do you have pet insurance? Sometimes they also offer a helpful with vets and nurses on. It's early days so don't give up. All the best. You have the support of everyone on the forum. Rachel.

Oh I'm so sorry to hear your news of Merlin jasmin12. This must be most distressing to you & Merlin. I've no experience of this happening so can't give any helpful advice other than I really would speak to your vet or get another another vet to see him. Perhaps taking another person with you who is less emotionally involved so that they can listen objectively - I'm not saying you don't but when we are distressed it is often difficult to make sense of what is being said to us. The advice of contacting your insurers (if Merlin is insured) is a good one. Although never experiencing it with our cats, I understand that a cat that is blind can live a good life still, although not outdoors unless you can secure your garden so he can't get out or other cats in. I hope you can get help soon so you know what the options are. Please let us know how Merlin gets on.

arrr sorry to hear about Merlin i know how distressing it can be, you just feel hopeless, like sarahhound said i would take him to another vet asap for a second opinion, i know you feel he would be distressed but you really need to know for Merlin's sake, they may beable to give him some treatment and i'm sure it would put your mind at rest.
is it possible that Merlin could have had a little stroke? i do think you need to get him checked over again though.Good luck and keep us informed.
