Joey, who is almost 8years old has been diagnosed with a grade 3 heart murmer. At the moment he doesn't need and medication for it, but as it has come on in the past year, we will be keeping an eye on him. Prior to us getin him, he had spent 6 years in a house, never going on walks or having adequate excercise.
Is there anything we could do to keep his heart healthy? Has anyone else had a dog with a heart murmer before?

Katy had one when she was little but by 8 months she had grown out of it. Vet said its quite common. The other thing he said was always get 2 vets to check a heart murmur on a skinny type dog because sometimes the ribs rub the end of the stethoscope and give a false reading, because it sounds like a heart murmur! He said if two vets hear it, then its true.
Sadly I've had no real experience of older dogs with one. My grandmothers Dobe had one, he coped well with meds (can't remember the name but they were expensive!) for about 2 years before his heart couldn't cope any longer. They prolonged his life but the murmur did eventually take over again. He didn't really suffer for those two years, although he wasn't very happy in the heat, had to keep him cool.
Hope Joey is OK xxx

Poor Joey, hope he is OK.
I would say keep him adequately exercised and keep off the intense exercise for a while just to make sure. Also, make sure that he does not gain any weight.

When Rookie was diagnosed with his heart murmur two years ago the vet said carry on as normal just let him set the pace out walking, he still walks well- on thursday he went on a two mile walk with no issues. Of course all cases should be treated on there own merit. We find when hes getting tired he starts to cough. He's on meds but cant remember what they're called. Will post their name when next at my bf house.

Sorry don't have a lot of experience in this dept but from what I've heard exercise at their pace, don't increase exercise rapidly but then don't stop all exercise.
Weight is always something that its best keeping off so the heart doesn't need to overwork.
Try not to scare yourself with google and if in doubt contact the vets even just a phone call which they won't charge for, they give you so much information in a small time that its difficult to take in so make a list of what you want to know and ask away.
