Earl has been licking and nibbling his tail constantly for some time this morning. I have checked it over and I cannot see anything, so I have given him a stuffed KONG to take his mind off it. I just don't want him to make it sore.
Any ideas?

Is he nibbling near his bum B.T? could be anal glands need emptying. No, its around the middle of his tail. He has only recently had his anal glands releasing as well. It is now very wet with dog spit! He has stopped now, but keeps going back to it. I have read about hot spots, and it is not one of them. The signs of hot spots are wetness, redness, and hotness, but its only wet. Its cold and normal coloured! A sign of an infection is a bad smell, but Earl's just smells of dog breath due to having his mouth wrapped around it for the majority of the morning! It is around the area in between my fingers on the following photo, and as you can see it looks normal just a little soggy:

Could just be a random flea picked up from the grass. Even thou we treat them we still get the random one appear. Week before last I went to visit someone who had a puppy cocker and a springer. We went in for a chat they asked about my wrist etc and how much movement I was getting now, then moved onto the fact that the puppy was finally letting them comb here with a Flea comb.... Well I couldn't get out there quick enough, and wo and behold what did I find the next morning 1 Flea managed to nip it , and on went another frontline pod just to be safe even thou it was not due ( having said that I always treat Beau before he goes into Kennels Too ) Just to be sure x

I regularly treat Earl for fleas and there's nothing really more we can do right now. I know that fleas like the tail area (especially the base as it is harder for the dog to reach that area) therefore there is always a higher risk of fleas there. As you can see from the photo I put on, Earl's irritation doesn't seem to be right at the base so I don't know. He has stopped again now so I will monitor him closely and watch for any hot spots coming on or anything else. He had his last Spot-On on the 15th, his next one is due on the 10th of December so he is well up-to-date with that. It may even be a grass seed, what do you think? He has so much fur on his tail it is incredibly hard for me to see right down to the skin! When I have looked I have only managed to check about 20% of the skin in the affected area, so who knows! If he continues doing it today then I may take him to the vets for them to examine it as it must be really annoying for Earl.

If it were a grass seed there would be a small puncture hole, the flea will run any where on the body, just keep eye out when you stroke him, move the fur in the opposite direction that will soon flush it out, that is of course if it is one, it may not be, he may simply just have an itch LOL. Beau had been treated only 3 weeks before I found that one so there's no guarantee's. I wouldn't go rushing to the vets just yet, see how it goes Good luck x

Maybe he could have been stung, or just brushed against something itchy and the itch stuck around for a while Glad it seems to have stopped bothering him now!

Yes, I am guessing that is what happened now! Earl hasn't had a thought to the itch on his tail since yesterday morning when I originally posted, and his tail is still always wagging!

Could it be worms? Not a clue just a guess That's a very sensible suggestion. I do worm him regularly and his tail stopped bothering him in less than a day so I am guessing it was just a rather consistent itch! His stools also look normal and worm free so all the evidence is positive
