hi all , first post here - no I have not introduced myself as yet but I wanted to get right in and ask a question about socialisation ...
our pup , Maisie ( lab x springer ) is just over 9 months old now and she used to socialise very well with other dogs - always a bit of you chase me / I chase you - now when we take her out to the beach or up to the moors it is all ball - ball - ball. she insists on having a ball thrown, running , chasing to the exclusion of even seeing other dogs around here.
advice ? many thanks Maisie's dad

You can do so much training with a dog that so wants a particular thing - ball in your case. I wouldn't worry about her not being interested in dogs for now. She is an adolescent and they do go through emotional changes. She 'is done' with her socialising with dogs. She might get interested in dogs when she comes into season - LOL. But, in the meantime, do a lot of training (particularly recall - even if she has a good one now - she will soon start testing the boundaries) with her using her ball as reward. Good luck.

It really depends if you mind or don't mind the dogs obsession,my daughters lovely natured Lab/Springer rescue dog, who we take out most days while they work, used to drive us nuts with his continuous demands for ball throwing,we started putting the ball away after a while,so he found sticks, which we ignored.Quite quickly he got the message we were not playing throw, and settled down to enjoy his walks, sniffing trails in the woods, chasing with our own dog,and interacting with other dogs. After a little ball throwing on the beach,he mostly enjoys swimming(he is mainly Lab). His recall is super, which must be the most important thing for your dog to learn. A friends dog no longer gets taken to the beach anymore, and has walks in secluded places,as her dogs obsession was such that any other dog going for her ball was attacked.Being a collie, she quickly developed her serious obsessive behaviour, which was a pity as she used to be a lovely dog,(and still is,but sadly not with other dogs). I must say I haven't met such a problematic obsessional behaviour in Springers who frequent the beach, they seem game for anything, but not a scrap.

Dogs love toys! Owners with dog-aggressive dogs would just love their dogs to ignore other dogs for a ball. On the other hand- Make an account on Photobucket and upload your photos to there. There paste the IMG code to a forum post. With the avatar thing, are you sure your photos meet the MB quantity required?

I don't find her love of balls problematic but she is not an aggressive dog and I found her sudden ( relatively ) lack of interest in play with other dogs curious -- others have addressed that.
thanks for your photo tips.

Don't know about grynch B.T,but we found a dog continually wanting a ball throwing on a long walk to be quite frankly a pain in the bum, rather like a nattering child,so walk becomes less of a pleasure.Dogs also have to learn to walk along with you nicely.

I understand this (well, you didn't say so in your post anyway). I was just stating an example. She could just be going through a phase.

My suggestion to use the love of balls as a reward for Maisie was not meant just for training but also to prevent obsession developing. If the owner controls the game and interactions - obsession is unlikely. It's when the owner gives in and gives in and gives in to the dog that the dog learns to demand with increased intensity. And such a dog is a PAIN.

thanks all for your helpful comments - just by the way on longer walks I have tried recently to limit the ball throwing to the beginning if the walk to tire her out ( as if !! ) and she had been a bit better re. walking but still constantly checks back in order to see if I'm ready to throw the ball again but again my concern was she was just not socialising. - once again tho that's been addressed I'll try to get a pic or two up tomorrow - at the moment the young lady is crashed out on our bed and I've got to try to talk her into her own bed ( once again - as if ) cheers

thanks , and how do I post pics here or is just by avatars ? Do you have an account with photo bucket ? If not get one it is free. Once you have it you can easily upload from your computer onto it, then copy the link and paste into a thread on the forum. There are instructions how to do this on the General Board, but just shout if they do not make sense and we are here to help
