Tilly has been nibbling around Alfies muzzle, around his eyes and sometimes on his legs. It's quite funny to watch, as Alfie looks to be enjoying it.. and he has odd length whiskers I was wondering why she does this? I thought it was a submissive thing, as I remember her nibbling around Winnies (my old dog) mouth, so perhaps it's not. Could it be frustration? bectil

Is Tilly grooming Alfie? Pups tend to lick round an older dogs mouth, they really do some odd things at times.

Could be "flea bites" which a lot of dogs do out of affection. Monty has done it to me before when I scratch his forelegs as they tend to get itchy for some reason lol. He nibbles and licks my arm while I scratch his!

Thankyou for your replies migsy: I did wonder whether she was grooming him, though she usually nibbles after he's tried to bite her paws, as she doesn't like her paws being bitten (understandably!), which made me think it could be frustration. There are times when he just puts his muzzle in front of her face, as though to say 'nibble me' Possibly she is grooming him, and at other times distracting him from biting her? Pawsforthought: I never realized it could be affection! Tils has nibbled me a few times, after she finished with Alfie , though she use to lick my hands alot, which I was told it might have been away of her showing affection. bectil

Yes, Katy (who is younger) does this all the time to Lucy. She never returns the favour, but both seem to enjoy it.

When she does this this muzzle, is it after feeding time at all? She may be able to taste the food he has just eaten around his mouth! For the other parts, I am not sure, but it seems you have had some good comments.

My younger dog licks my older dog around the mouth, however she dont use her teeth. This I think is partially reaffirming she is no threat to the older - i.e submissive However as a pup she did food beg on the older.

our Jackrussell pup (5months) does this to my Lab all of the time. And My lab Casey does it to a lot of other dogs as well apparently it is a sign of affection! But saying that Lola the jackrussell does it and then a few seconds later proceeds to bite Casey's neck ... but she is a puppy haha
Actually as cazgolden (no idea how to tag yet) said it could be a submissive thing, I know with my horses, my youngster when she was between 8months and 12months she would 'mouth' where they almost chatter and show there teeth to an older horse usually by there mouths. So it could be a similar thing!

Thanks again for your responses It's the older dog (Tilly) nibbling the younger dog, rather than vise versa - It must be affection. Tilly escaped the other week (which is completely unlike her) while Alfie was out on his walk. My dad found her and took her to my mum and Alfie (who were looking for her on the field) and apparently Tilly was SO happy to see Alfie.. wish I was there to see! zoeelouisee - Add an '@' at the start of the users name that you want to tag. @ caz2golden - Just remove the space bectil
