Well today has been eventful to say the least!
My pet sitter collected Weem this morning to take him to the vets for his op, everything ok so far...... Then I get a call from the vet saying that he was too young to be castrated & that if he were her cat she wouldn't do it. I had no idea that a vet could possibly think that a kitten of 18wks of age was too young to castrate, especially as I have had males neutered before, one was even younger, with no problems. Infact I believe even the Cats Protection promote early neutering (is 18wks really early though, in my opinion no!) I insisted that I wanted him done today as he was already stressed as he doesn't like new people & I didn't wanting having to go through all this again. After some thought, and a chat with my friend I decided to complain to the vets as I was made to feel bad for wanting him to go through with the op & the vet had succeeded in making me feel sick with worry wondering if I'd done the right thing. I was put through to the head vet who was extremely apologetic & agreed that the vet who saw Weem had been wrong. I was later phoned by the surgeon carrying out the op to confirm that she was happy to go ahead.
I am happy to confirm his op went well & he recovered from the anesthetic quickly.
I have just registered Weem with this practice & am now left wondering if I should register him elsewhere.

Yes, wasn't at all impressed! Weem is here having cuddles with his mummy, as usual! He's like a little limpet, I love him to tiny pieces, although having him jump on my knee when I'm sat on the loo can be a bit much He's acting as if nothing has happened & is still trying to charge about, I'm going to have my work cut out trying to stop him

That sounds odd when Neo was a kitten we got told when he was old enough we should get him neutered (which we did when he was old enough) I wonder how many other people that vet has told people not to get their cats neutered?
Glad Weem is okay xx

Hi, I think you were right to complain to the vets & I'm glad you got an apology & Weem had his op. The only thing I can think of is that it used to be normal to neuter at 6 months (I make that around 24 weeks). It's only recently that the idea of early neutering has been suggested (due to research into possible side effects etc.) and its possible that not all vets agree with that idea yet. However you shouldn't be made to feel bad about asking for it - the vet should have explained why she thought he was too young and discussed it calmly & not emotionally with you. Glad it all went OK & Weem is fine
