My 5 month old Cockapoo puppy is in a 30" crate and she loves it, uses it to relax in the day and sleep at night. I was given this crate as a hand-me-down and it suited Bindi well when we got her at 8 weeks old. I had bought in advance a 42" crate so it would last through adlulthood or until she didnt want to use a crate andy more and with her getting bigger I thought I would build it and use it BUT NO!
Bindi is petrified of it, wont go in, I put her in and the fear in her eyes was too much. We placed it in the same area as the last with the same bedding, toys etc. I have taking it down now but just wondered if I should persevere with it or forget it as she is happy with the small one, I just wanted her to have more room and she is growing fast.
thanks for any tips

I'm not a dog crate expert, our dogs, years ago, didn't have crates. However I wonder if she thinks you've taken away her familiar safe place. Perhaps not replacing the current crate but putting the other one up with bedding in etc & giving her a chance to get familiar with it & making it smell of her while she still has the security of the other one.

karin could you not set the smaller cage up inside the bigger cage so she gets used to it then after a week or so take the smaller cage out but put the same bed, toys and stuff in it. You could also feed her in the bigger cage so she associates it with nice things like food and play

Does she really need a crate? I got rid of Katy's crate at 4 months old, she simply didn't need it and was better behaved and happier out of it than in it.
If you really do want to stick with a crate, then I think you just have to persevere. Get rid of the old one but keep all the things that went in it smelling the same, don't wash them. Pop them into the new crate and leave the door open so she can get used to it in her own time.

You could also try retraining her to the crate. Like a little refresher. Dogs don't generalise well
