I know there's a few people from near Durham on here and even though this only seems to be in Coxhoe, they'll probably move on if they're not caught on.
Just seen this posted on Facebook (by my brother who actually works for the RSPCA).
'BEWARE DOG OWNERS - there are 2 woman going around the coxhoe area posing as RSPCA workers knocking on doors asking to see your dogs. They are targeting homes with dogs with a view to stealing them! This has been confirmed by the RSPCA. Keep a close eye on your dogs everyone!'
Might have found it a bit unlikely if my brother hasn't posted it as surely they'll have been made aware of it if it's true. The post on Fb also had people commenting on it saying they have been targeted.

Scary stuff I saw something similar saying about the South Yorkshire area, but then someone else said that the RSPCA are currently doing a mass promotion so some scumbags have decided to use it as an opportunity. I've just shared a photo of a guy seen in S. Yorks pretending to be an RSPCA guy. If you get anyone coming to your house saying that they're from the RSPCA, remember to ask to see some ID or something! If they don't have any, then chances are they're up to no good and you should probably call the police to make them aware.

I guess if they are the really people from the RSPCA who knock on your door you can refuse to let them in until you have done checks on them. Even fake people can have id and I wouldn't know a real from a fake to be far?!? Just remember to phone a number you have found rather than one they give you as that is probably fake too.

To be fair I'd probably just ring the RSPCA near me, I'm sure they'd tell me if they were in the area.
But I might just consider ringing the police straight away, (not to sound arsey) but there's no reason anyone would have for reporting the way Jasper's looked after to the RSPCA so if they turned up, I'd be mighty suspicious...
I haven't heard about the S.Yorks one but I'll keep an eye out. As far as I know there's no pictures of these 2 yet...

And I did think that Gladys, people can make all sorts now so who would know? You'd think that genuine RSPCA inspectors making calls would do it in a proper marked van, but people none the wiser probably wouldn't think of these things :/

It's all very worrying, there seems to be a lot of dogs being stolen of late and the lengths people are going to is very scary.

If the RSPCA know, shouldn't they be stopping this immediately? Police involved too? My horses are kept in Coxhoe which is worrying for me!!! Luckily I now live in Washington so my dogs are from harms way! But hopefully, my horses will be okay, they are looked after and seen to every day about 4 times a day so, they will be fine I am sure!

I imagine they probably are AL, but until they turn up at someone's door I don't think there'd be much they can do :/ I'll have a word with my brother if I get a chance, but there's been comments on the post saying that people have had the women to the door. Also Leroy, where abouts in Durham are you? In from Chester-Le-Street. I'm the opposite way round, love cats but dogs are my life. My dad used to have a feral cat called Micky. He used to climb in my aunt's handbag (the cat, not my dad ) and claw her hand whenever she put it near the bag, the little sod! She wasn't a fan of cats and I think Micky picked up on that!

Charlotte, I don't think they're calling round pretending that someone has reported you for not looking after your dog properly. They're probably posing as charity collectors and asking for donations. We once had a couple come round a few years ago and me and my mam both signed up to send regular donations. But we haven't had any since then.
Gladys - You're right, they could have fake ID I suppose. The person that I got the picture of the S. Yorks guy from said they'd had people round who'd come in and signed them up to donate, but someone else commenting said that the one she'd had round hadn't been interested in coming in or anything, he was just asking about the dog. So maybe that's a good indicator.

Hmm could be as someone posted on the status saying they were seen getting out of a car and putting bibs on. There's been plenty o people confirming it but apparently police have denied it? Seems a bit of a weird scenario.
Guess you don't know who you can trust!
We had a Dogs Trust guy come a few years ago, we just happily let him in, no second thought. Could have been anyone!

This is going on down our way too, was in the local paper, they are targetting houses with dogs, then just sounding out the type of dog present, if it's what they are after then a note is made of your address, pit bulls and the likes were one of the targets
