Milo is lunging at motorbikes, when they are parked or waiting at the lights he isn't bothered but when they're moving- especially when they are revving (making that nuhhhhh nurhhhhhh sound ) he just lunges right into the road, well he tries but i have had him on a very short lead by roads since discovering this behavior to avoid any accidents. It has only started recently and progressed from getting excited to full on lunging in a very short space of time. I have no clue how to go about this, if i had a motorbike things would be a lot easier but i don't and i don't know anyone who has!! Any suggestions are welcomed and appreciated!!!!

Could you get a CD with noises on that you could play to get him used to the noise?

Haha, it's not always the first thing you think of. We have a CD that we thought might help Pepper get used to the sound of children, but it doesn't really have the right sound for what we want. We could have used that for Ellie when she developed her fear of motorbikes, but we haven't.

If you have an ipod touch (or anything made from apple) you could look at apps with the sound of children on, they might have various ones and if played through speakers could be very useful!! I've been looking at the motorbike sound apps and some seem useful!

Is it aggressive lunging or just over excited? I'm gonna mention BAT (again ) If you walk near to one, look for a displacement behaviour (lip lick/head turn etc) praise and walk back a few steps. Repeat getting a step closer every few repetitions (but making sure he doesn't tip over into lunging mode. You could always click/mark him for looking at it calmly then move a step in, then click again for calm etc etc. Or you could try distracting him with a lovely smelly treat, or you could train him to target your hand so when you go past, he's not paying attention to it (would take a bit of ground work first). Can't say I've come across a dog that is excited about parked motorbikes lol!

miloooox, isn't Milo learning that lunging at motorbikes gets him nowhere? Sorry it is the best I can think of apart from CDs at this time!

Hi miloooox, I sympathise with your situation, how strange it has come on all of a sudden, presumably he has never bothered before with motorbikes?? orpheous87 and charlottte have both given good ideas, I cannot add much more I'm afraid. Dotty is highly reactive to cars and big lorries etc but weirdly she is fine with motorbikes. Thus we do a lot of street walking at her own pace, she is now three and has been like this all her life so we have learned how to manage the situation. She is okay walking on wide pavements and will walk nice but always watching, but if a lorry or bus goes past she will lunge. When street walking she carries a small soft toy with her, it seems to pacify her a little and if she does lunge or bark then it is directed at toy and not, say, at a strangers ankles! We also spend time maybe on quieter streets where traffic is further away and practise her sits, give paw etc, so she can still see traffic but hopefully learn that it's not posing a threat. Keep us updated and hopefully since its a new behaviour you can get him out of it before it becomes second nature, good luck!

Thankyou for all the great suggestions everyone. Charlotte- It's over excited, thankyou for your ideas, i've started teaching him a reliable 'look at me' (as we've only just started it isn't very reliable but we're getting there!) so whenever one goes past i'll get him to concentrate on me instead of the motorbike BT- It's an over excited thing not aggressive so rather than chasing it away he is just getting excited about the loud noise McCuddles- Yeah it just started randomly like a week or two again and now it's all the time!! Thankyou, i might steal that idea from you! I hope Dotty gets over her reactivity with cars/lorries!!!!
