Skye is a long haired cat (obviously!), and previously she had been eating the regular Turkey variety of JWB one month, and Applaws the next. When I went to get my next bag, I spotted the hairball variety and thought I'd try that instead (as I had my £3 off voucher from the comp posted on here!). ( www.amazon.co.uk/James-Wellbeloved-Turkey-Rice-Hairball/dp/B00CDHA7PQ/ref=sr_1_6?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1375558557&sr=1-6&keywords=hairball+food ) Well gradually, over the 10 days I had been using it, the skin around her eyes went bright red, itchy and sore. They also started weeping and she couldn't open her eyes properly. It was obvious she was uncomfortable and in pain, so I spoke with my vet (couldn't actually get to the vet due to a flash flood closing and damaging the road), who made me realise it had started around the same time as I changed to the food. He advised me to go back to what she was previously eating, which I did, and after less than 48 hours, her eyes were already a lot better looking, and today, 4 days later, she's back to normal completely. The vet didn't give her any treatment what-so-ever, so I am certain it was this food causing her the problems. I am going to speak with the JWB company as this food is meant to be all natural and hypoallergenic, yet something in it caused my cat to suffer. I am in the process of switching to Applaws food full time, I will not feed my cats any of JWB's products again. And, just to make a point, Skye still got hairballs while eating it! Just left reviews on Amazon for it too, don't want anyone elses cat to potentially suffer!

Oh dear that's not good. Glad Skye is better again. I had been considering using James Well beloved with our three but I won't now I have read this. Thanks for letting us know.

I'm sure millions of animals do very well on it, but for such an extreme reaction I'm concerned about what is in it!

That is a very bad reaction! Sorry to read about Skye & the JWB, like you we feed 2 of our cats the ordinary JWB with no ill effects, wonder what was in the hairball variety, I was thinking on possibly feeding it to Penny now's she's lost the weight. Hope you get an answer from JWB soon.

Must say that I tried JWB as a low allergen food for Georgia and a) both of mine didn't like it and b) what Georgia did eat didn't seem to help at all. I've found Almo Nature to be really good as a low allergen. She's having a "I don't like that" phase so we are giving that a break at the minute. Glad Skye is coming back to better health.

Poor Skye, glad to hear she's improved since changing back to her other food.
I've always been a bit dubious about JWB since discovering they are made by Crown Pet Foods... The same company that makes Royal Canin...

petitsfilous we have one cat that is on JWB dried (she was on the wet as well but has gone off it). Lexie has a sensitive stomach/IBS, probably stress related, but at one point she had to have Hills Z/D which was the one that settled her stomach - we have her medical records & she had the same issues when she was still a few month old kitten with tests that found giardia in her digestive system after a biopsy. Same solution, Z/D then JWB We tried changing her to Royal Canin when we got her as that was what we were feeding our existing cats but although she eat a little if she's wholly on it she's sick so we had to swap to JWB from RC for the others. However Roman, although amenable about the change, really likes his RC (Fit32 & Vitality/Lively) so as Lexie is in her room overnight we give him a mix of JWB & RC then - he loves it & often doesn't eat much of the JWB during the day but eats all the mix overnight. The vet is very happy with Roman's weight & physical condition so I'm happy that it works for him.

Sorry to hear about Skyes reaction SarahHound I hope she is fully recovered now. My cats didn't like JWB anti-hairball food so they are now on the Arden grange one. JWB is actually under the company of 'Mar petcare' (as in M&Ms chocolate etc) which is also connected to Crown Pet Foods, along with Royal canine, Cesar and pedigree. As well as Aquarian fish food and Catsan. But that don't really mean they are all the same quality, it just means theat Mar bought the said companies and then continued to produce the food they were making to begin with. Each brand would be run by different product managers etc. And probably in different factories.

I spoke with JWB, who apologised and said it was either the pea fibre or linseed found in the hairball food that must have caused her reaction as she's been fine on the original recipes, which don't contain these. They said all their machines are cleaned thouroughly in between products being made.
They said they wanted to compensate my, by sending me a new bag of the original foods that she did well on. So I accepted, and they sent me a 300g sample sized bag! I found that a bit cheeky because it was 4kg I bought, most of which has gone to waste (well, I'll give it to a rescue, but it still cost me a lot of money). So yeah, although I accept their apology, I'm still not using it again. The kitty cats are quite happy on Applaws.

Oh that is indeed cheeky. Oh well as long as the kitty cats are happy.

The cheek of it!!! I'd have been really annoyed about that. Doesn't seem that they've played fair on that. Oh well, we have all learned from this.
