For any one that has had experience with kittens...
Just wondering how you can stop the kittens feeding from the mum? Inka is really run down and far to skinny, She has had a wheezing chest and a cough since being with me, ( kittens are all fine ) She's booked back in the vets today at 10.30.
And i'm just after advise really I have a cage and been putting the kittens in at night time to give her a rest and recouparate, all the kittens are eating ( just over 4 weeks old ) but prefer mums milk.
I've been told i can put a baby grow on her, or seperate her from the kittens i.e letting the kittens come downstairs to mingle with mine, but not overly keen on that,or i can bring them down in the cage..Just so Inka gets some rest time away from them , she needs it. They are sucking all the energy from her and she needs to get better.,. but cant do that whilst still feeding them.
So any ideas would be great. thanks in advance.

hi - good idea she is going to the vets as i would say, from experience, that she may be lacking in something. mums usually have enough milk to feed kittens until they go to the food/water rather than her. is she eating well to build up her stamina? obviously kittens wont reject milk if mum is there to give but they are too young to take away as you know. be interesting to see what the vet says. the problem is separating the kittens from mum to give her a rest is that they do need her for reassurance and comfort until they are a bit older helps with the progress/social side of things. hope goes well with vets and he can shed some light on why she is run down.

Hi Nanny cat, thanks for the advise. Under Vet orders i have had to seperate Inka from the Kittens, she is really poorly. So i have had to bring down the kittens to my living room, they wont be stuck in a cage but i can only let them out under supervision, My cats are use to kittens, and they have each other so socializtion shouldnt be a problem. Inka has raging Flu and a chest infection, she is currently quaratined in my spare room, The kittens are all ok, ( cleared by the vet ) but if they catch it they will get ill really quick,so its for the own good, and also Inkas as she need to rest. and start eating better. They will be 5 weeks on friday and following the vets orders is best to take them away from there mum, And i feel terrible about it. Inka has stronger antibotics than she was given last week, and the vet is confident this will help clear her chest and flu up but will take a few weeks to do so . xx

Poor Inka - I didn't realise she was ill Lozzy. I hope that she gets better now that she has had antibiotics from the vet and that you have taken the kittens from her - thank goodness they are 5 weeks old and can get by without Inca's milk. Inca will get much stronger now that she is no longer feeding kittens - they take everything from a mother and she wouldn't have had any strength to fight off an illness.

Jenny, thats what the vet had said to be as well, she needs to re build back up her immune system. She had a slight cough when i picked them up from Iris's - which i knew about and they said to keep an eye on her, but she slowly got worse over the last week, and the antibotics the vet gave her last week havent done anything for her at all! but hopefully she will start to improve now. x

Hi Lozzy - I always made a bodysuit probably called a onesie now - to stop the kittens suckling so didn't need to separate Mum and babies. In fact I'm making one this afternoon for Evie's op. However it doesn't matter now that you have had to separate them for the sake of the health of Mum and babies. Hope she is soon well.

Well done! I really hope that Inka is okay and that all goes well! Sorry, I don't have experience of kittens other than when I got my ginger moggy, Kitty-Aslan but he was obviously already feeding on his own by this time! Good luck Lozzy

I have no experience with breeding however I do have a couple of suggestions:
Mum should be on a food that meets growth nutrition profiles, suitable for kittens / lactating queens.
After any course of antibiotics in cats (or humans for that matter) I would always follow with probiotic supplementation of the food. Fortiflora feline or similar ought to help.
Hope she's fighting fit soon.

Poor Inka. I hope she feels better very soon. The kittens will be fine, try not too feel bad. Your other cats can teach them all the bad habit a welll grown cat needs!! The important thing is that the kittens had the first milk, the collostrum, during the 1st few days of life. Weaning now and supplement milk (if needed) will be fine for them! Give Inka a hug for me!
