Our collie cross, Kidder, has got one of these on the go at the moment. Have any of you seen this before (on dogs not rugby players)?
Proper name is hematoma. Can require intervention depending on severity. The swelling is bleeding inside the ear I think, so it's puffy and hanging down a bit with the weight of the fluid.
I noticed it at the beginning of last week and did let the vet have a look at it. It is going down now, slowly but surely, will soon be right as rain. It was only a small one and the vet wasn't concerned as there is no evidence of mites, infection or foreign objects. Vet reckons he's probably banged it or scratched it a good un and burst a blood vessel that way. This is just after we had picked the dogs up from a ten day stint at the kennels as we were away on holiday, typical ha ha.
just wondered if you guys had ever seen this before? Plus I get to start a thread off on the new forum, lol.

Never seen it on dogs but hubby use to play rugby so seen plenty on peeps (some of his friends have them). I think a one off should go back to normal but if it keeps happening (like with front row rugby players) it ends up staying. Nice!?!?

I haven't seen one before, but I was just reading about them in a holistic dog health care book!! How are you treating it?

Yeah Gladys they do look odd on humans don't they, at least not so bad on dogs I suppose as covered in fur!
We don't need to do anything with K's as its only mild. Just keep an eye on it the vet said oh and watch in case swelling went down to his eye. Nothing going on though its just slowly getting smaller. As his ear is black anyway it doesn't really show much, more of it feeling thick to the touch. I only noticed it really because when he pricks his ears up that one kind of hung down. Have to say though he wasn't bothered by it at all so fair play to him really.
if its a large one I think they drain them off. I was glad he didn't need anything like that, well obviously haha

That's not too bad then! My book (it's written by Holly Mash) says that witch hazel can help reduce it, as can arnica At least it's not bothering him!

julie72 Hi Julie, how is Kidder? We'd like to use your problem in our Dog Answers section, but I wondered whether you have a photo of the hematoma that we could use? I realise it's probably gone down by now, but on the off-chance did you capture it at the time? Thanks, Sophie

Hi Sophie!
Ahhh what a shame, I didn't take a picture! Unlike me really but as it was fairly small and the fur on his ear is black it was quite hard to see, it just felt thick to the touch.
It's 95% gone away now although his ear does still look a bit kind of bent at the end still.
Sorry I couldn't help Sophie. Gutted, our kidder could have potentially found some fame there.

Hi julie72, we'll probably still use the question, but we'll try to sort a photo from elsewhere, don't worry - Kidder will be a star in writing if not in photo Glad it's nearly gone, hope it continues to heal well.
