Today Oscar had his first meal of his new diet!
I don't know if anybody here is interested in feeding a raw diet but i though i would make a sort of diary thing for the first few weeks of our raw feeding experience. I'll just mention the meals he had and any developments that occur, and maybe include some pictures too!
He was fasted yesterday and this morning he had about 100g of minced beef for breakfast.
He's having a chicken thigh for dinner so we will see how he deals with that.
He will have vitamin E, Dorwest keepers mix and salmon oil added to his diet too. Everything will be added once a day except for the vitamin E which will be added every other day. The keepers mix isn't here yet though so that's not being added yet. And the salmon oil we got isn't the best in the world but it will have to do until its all gone, then i will get the other one.

Nice work Bextull
Kidder had a lamb rib, chicken wing and a veg cube tonight. Babs had a chicken wing, tiny bit of lamb off the end of kidders rib (so she doesn't miss out on the lamb taste) and a veg cube. Chicken thighs are on the menu tomorrow.
Tomorrow is my day for making up another batch of veggies. Are you going to do fruit/veg? Not everyone does, but just wondering if you are.
Might be a good idea to take a pic of Oscar's body shape now so you can compare it again in a few weeks. I wish I did this with Kidder, he lost 1.7kg in weight during the first couple of months (ish) and he wasn't even a fatty!
I guess you've seen the thread 'what's in the bowl today' on PF? I love looking at that thread, your photo reminded me.

Yep,I'm adding fruit and veg! Its veg day tomorrow actually!
I have 3 boxes,1 box with carrot and parsnip in with a little mushed bananna, another box with beans, butternut squash and celery in and another box with apple, bananna and mango in.
I will just have to defrost a whole box if i want too add it in though!
I have taken pictures of the inside of Oscars ears, not for any reason just out of curiosity to see if anything improves with them(even though there is nothing wrong),his fur and his teeth(but i need a better picture of those).
Will take an overview shot tomorrow and a side one of his body condition.
I have!
We got a terrible salmon oil! The beaphar one,it was only a fiver but i am getting the more expensiv one next time!

Nice menu Bextull. Gourmet all the way! So much better than dishing up kibble innit
You'll have seen that sheeps head then ha ha, god did I laugh when I saw that.
There's no looking back now is there. You'll probably notice the difference around his waist/rib area and the big leg muscles, well if K is anything to go by.
Poo watching next Bextull! If I feed green tripe and chicken it comes out two tone, part dark part pale (reminds me of guinness lol). You may notice different meats come out darker than others. And then there's the joy of the white poo once its been outside for 24 hours. Mirth.

You don't need to defrost all the stuff. Take a saw and get your dad to cut it into cubes the size you need. If the box is too big just cut few cubes at the time and defrost only what you need

Hehehe!! I'll be on here to tell you all about Oscar poo!!!
No tripe for me I'm afraid,no where to get it! But its chicken everyday for at least a week for Oscar!
And sardines in tomato sause will replace mince beef one day this week, probably thursday or friday.
That is a good idea verab1. I do that with chunks of mince anyway so i will give the veg a whack tomorrow! I might as well cut it all up seeing as i will be at it!

Has Oscar had sardines in tomato sauce before? I give Oggy sardines in olive or sunflower oil as anything with tomatoes makes him vomit. I also buy fresh mackerel (very good value) and boil it in water and give him that with a bit of rice.He loves it

No he hasn't but he has had tomato sauce before with no problems. Its not a problem if he doesn't like them, they were only 49cent for a tin.

No problems yet but i can't say that his poos have changed. He doesn't go as much but they are still very much the same as before, but its early days yet.

Sounds like you are doing well.....I will however reiterate to go slowly with the diet....he may be fine just now but too much too soon and your could have a dose of colitis and diarrhoea! ........Bextull...Kronch salmon oil is a really good one and seems initally expensive but is very economical.....I ordered a 2.5 litre bottle in April and I still have some left....will have to reorder in the next two weeks but for £35 for 3 months of salmon oil for 4 dogs is good going, you get smaller bottles too.

Is that where the white poos come from, raw feeders?
If my dogs find one of them, they roll in it
So happy it is going well for you Bextull.
Mine love tinned sardines, mackrel or herring (though like a few others mine are usually in oil).
I will stick with the kibble and dog meat, still too chicken to go raw!

I know,i will be going slow don't worry!
Looking at Kronch salmon oil over here, its €22 for a 500ml bottle including delivery!!!
So i was looking at healthy hounds salmon oil instead, which is only €14 with delivery and it says its an alternative to kronch.
This is it,
creavenspremium.com/epages/950002080.sf/...433&Currency=EUR
But know i am having a look at grizzly salmon oil too!
Minced beef for breakfast today again, with salmon oil added.
There has been 1 notable difference since switching to raw, how much Oscar drinks. He isn't drinking half as much as he used too and he didn't pant at all yesterday even though it was warm out!

2 drumsticks again tonight! This time he ate outside.
Cleaned up poo this morning at around half 10 and he has only had 1 poo since then,i think anyway i havn't walked the garden yet.
It didn't smell and it wasn't soft but it wasn't small and compact either.

It took Oggy about three-four weeks to get his poo more formed and solid.
When the weather is bad I get a picnic blanket (the one with the waterproof on one side and blanket on the other) and put it in the kitchen or utility room for him to eat on. As he eats on the waterproof side the grease is easily washed off.
One thing he did do first three or four weeks is picked up other dogs poo. The first time he did it I nearly passed out as he never did that before. I hotfooted him to the vet who said not to panic as he is withdrawing from his usual food and his body is craving various additives. From then on he had a muzzle on walks where we could not see what he was picking up (at night etc)

Well Oscar has a towel to eat on when he is inside. I just put it on the floor and give him his bones on it,but i might go looking for a mat which i can wipe down.
Oscar does seem to be eating quite a bit of grass lately. He just seems to run to the side of the field to have a munch on some.
Dognutter,Oscar moves too! He circles usually to try and smell it! Its so annoying!
Minced beef this morning with veg(butternut squash, celery, beans), salmon oil and vit E. Oscar had some of it in a kong today too.

Chicken thigh for dinner tonight.
Mum was fairly annoyed when i told her that i wanted to get the healthy hounds salmon oil the next time! Even though its the same price at the other stuff!(1 bottle of this is 2 bottles of the crap stuff)
I'm sorry if i want to get the better stuff for the same price,if not cheaper, than the crap stuff!!
And dad said to me when oscar was having dinner(he ate outside and dad was out having a beer) that he didn't think oscar liked raw food. I asked why and he said because his tail doesn't wag!!! It never wagged before either! I just told him that and said that a wagging tail doesn't mean dogs are happy!
And now they are on about school an raw feeding! Yes of course i will have time to make up raw meals when I'm back at school, thats what weekends are for aren't they?
God!!!!
I wish they would just stop asking questions and listen to what i am trying to say!

Oscar had his sardines in tomato sauce for breakfast today!
He absoutely loved them! He couldn't have eaten them any faster! The didn't make him sick but they had me gagging, even breathing through my mouth didn't help,it was disgusting
And to make it worse i had to sit beside a dog with fishy breath all the way to the beach afterwards!
Phew!!! Glad thats over though! 2 more tins of sardines to go,but they are definitely not making an appearance any time soon!
Verab1,probably a little late in the conversation but,i never knew you fed raw?
I'm also happy to say that Oscar doesn't have any craving for dog poo since switching!
Chicken thigh for dinner tonight.
This is day 5 of raw feeding and no major improvements yet, other than drinking less water.

Well because he doesn't need to drink as much he seems to play and run a bit longer than he used to.
He doesn't seem to have any mad fly arounds either, but they increased when feeding lathams and decreased when feeding applaws.
But i don't think he is more active or chilled out,its a little hard to tell too with the heat about the last 2 days.

Nope, but he isn't pooing as much though. But he isn't really getting to much bone to be honest. He is getting either a thigh or drumsticks each night but they don't contain much bone really.

Know what you mean with the thighs, it's like is that all the bone there is in there?
Opened up a pack of lamb ribs yesterday and for some reason there was hardly any bone in there, just in the ends not all the way through like they usually are. Fuming! Course if they were for MY dinner I'd have thought they were a right bargain.

mmmmm......................

Isn't it amazing how much enjoyment we get from feeding our dogs this way even though we aren't actually eating it ourselves, lol. And the weird thing is is that the novelty doesn't wear off either, not for us or the dogs! Our two still go crazy when it's food time

Diced beef and an egg and shell for breakfast!

You make Raw sound great Bextull.
Loved the faces in Oscars food.
I did not realise you could give dogs bacon, I would never have considered that.
I thought you crushed egg shells to aid digestion? Maybe I am getting things mixed up, you know me get confused quite easily!
What is Oscar making of it all, has he turned his nose up at anything yet?

Hehehe!!!!
Well i've always given Oscar the scraps of bacon, raw or cooked! He loves it,and it never reappeared after he had it.
You can crush the eggs if you want, you should if you are adding it for the calcium in it but its fine to give them whole eggs too. Dogs chew the shells so in a way it is crushed. Whole eggs make great additions to raw diets, but i don't think i would give dogs the shells if they were fed complete commercial food.
Don't worry you didn't get confused, you are quite right.
He loves it!!! Say the word 'dinner' and your in for a stampede........of just one dog!!! haha! Turn his nose up? Oscar? God no,you must be confusing him with some fussy counterpart!!
No,he has eaten everything i have thrown at him, even the egg with i wasn't expecting him to!
It was minced beef, salmon oil and a little keepers mix this morning.
Pork is going to be the next protein source.

I'm loving this diary of Oscar's raw food, Bextull! The only problem is, it makes me want to try raw with our two, but we haven't got the freezer space!
Plus, I'm not sure my parents would be convinced.
It's interesting about the bacon though. I would always have thought it might be a bit too salty for dogs but I guess in moderation it wouldn't be too bad?

Yeah, this diary is great. I really wouldn't recommend too much of the bacon though, it is officially far too salty by half but I'm sure Bextull doesn't give too much or too often. Ok for a bit of a treat now and then though perhaps?
Any white poos found yet Bextull?
Orpheous if it encourages you I'm finding now that pretty much all our twos meals are whole RMBs and not very much of the frozen prepacked natural instinct stuff that our freezer is almost empty. I just pick the meat up when I get our own food shopping in and feed it fresh from the fridge. We have a fridge freezer in the kitchen and were thinking about getting a small freezer for the garage but we're not going to need one now! Another few quid saved!

Bextull - pork! I haven't fed this yet myself but I do keep eyeing up the pork ribs in the shop.
I've steered clear so far because I'm not sure if it's ok or not. I'm pretty sure I remember smokeybear saying she fed raw pork but I'm not 100% sure. To do with swine disease I think. Not sure if pigs in the UK (or Ireland for you) are all vaccinated for this or if it's safe to feed the pork or what. I had heard about the freezing pork for three weeks (and make sure the freezer is cold enough) to declare it safe for dogs to eat but again, I'm not sure.
Have you looked into it?

Yeah, this diary is great. I really wouldn't recommend too much of the bacon though, it is officially far too salty by half but I'm sure Bextull doesn't give too much or too often. Ok for a bit of a treat now and then though perhaps?
Any white poos found yet Bextull?

That's what I was thinking about the bacon. A little every now and again surely wouldn't hurt.
Oh really? Hmm. I may broach the subject with them one day. Even if we just give them some raw food once every now and again (or is that frowned upon?).

mmmmmm bacon. Ha ha not much chance of the dogs getting any of mine, I love my bacon mmmmmm. Yeah why not now and again. No difference to me and my usual McDs order of big mac and cheeseburger and large fries fetish probably. Gutted they stopped doing the supersize fries.
Well some people give the odd bit of raw, perhaps for the teeth cleaning aspect. Maybe that could be a good way in for you? Usually in place of a kibble meal though, not both types at the same meal. Apparently it can give dogs the squits cos it goes through at different rates. never tried the two types together myself though so can't speak from experience.

Glad people are enjoying the thread!!
It was only 2 bits of bacon, the first he has had in about 4 weeks. I would think that its ok every now and then, but i wouldn't make a meal r anything out of it!
Pork is fine. You should freeze it for at least 45hr before feeding it though,to kill parasites because they need water to stay alive.
Never heard of the swine disease problem in raw pork? Its usually for Aujeszky's Disease but thats not a problem in the UK or Ireland.
They also say that you should freeze beef for at least 42hrs-1 week,as it can carry a parasite called neospora caninum. But i fed it fresh this week with no trouble, but i would have liked to freeze it before hand.
Orpheous- If all you can do is mix raw with commercial foods then go for it! Thats what i did before i switched fully. Oscar had about 2 or 3 raw meals a week and he had RMB each week too. As for mixing kibble and raw in the same meal,i'm not to sure about that. There is no research done to suggest that they digest at different rates, and i have done it with no problems since we got Oscar. But i would think that it varies from dog to dog.
Forgot to post last night! He had a chicken thigh for dinner yesterday!
For breakfast today he had beef chunks, some keepers mix, vitamin E,salmon oil and 1 pork rib. (there wasn't enough beef chunks in the bag,so i obviously went wrong somewhere!!)
Took him quite a while to get through a small pork rib though! And he has another 2 for tonight!
As for changes in him,i have noticed a few,
- His coat is so much softer! And it doesn't smell of dog(not that it smelled much before either)
- He is more chilled at night
- He loves the word 'dinner' or 'breakfast'
- Shedding! I don't seem to be getting clumps of white fur on the ground when i brush him anymore.
Oh and julie,i got a semi-white poo!! BTW,i hate mc donalds!!!

I think it is actually more to do with Trichinosis rather than Aujezky's disease when it comes to pork.
I do not feed pork but I do feed pork ribs from time to time if they are on offer.
I however do not give my dogs bacon as it is too high in fat and salt.

Tonight for dinner Oscar had sardines in tomato sauce and 2 pork ribs.
I didn't gag tonight opening the sardines, and Oscar ate those first! the first pork rib went down fine, but he had a bit of trouble with the second one. But he finished it eventually.
We'll see how those went down tomorrow.
I'm not overly worried about Trichronsis in pork. I just had a look around this is what i found about it,
From August 2007 to January 2009, a total of 10,247 samples were taken and analysed for Trichinella in 33 slaughterhouses supervised by the local authority veterinary service. There were no positive samples detected during the survey.
This survey shows that over an 18-month period, there were no positive samples of Trichinella in a domestic pig sub-population which is most vulnerable to exposure to Trichinella-infested animals and birds.
Some EU countries, including the UK, Ireland and Sweden, have not reported cases of human trichinellosis caused by locally produced meat products for at least 20 years.
And after reading up on it,it appears that the more recent outbreaks in Europe were mainly from horsemeat imported from third countries and wild boar.
I wont be feeding pork to often anyway.

I am a bit older than you Bextull and this has always been the reason that we never fed our dogs pork.....and it gave them terrible wind LOL....I notice those studies are on humans though....not on other domestic animals...just a thought.
I do however very infrequently give my dogs a pigs trotter.....you should get one of these as a "treat" meal for Oscar Iam sure he would love them... but they can make them have stinky farts due to being quite high in fat

He has had pig trotters before! Loves them! Me on the other hand isn't so keen about them! He has only ever had 2 though, and they were about 4 months apart,i found the second one in the bottom of the freezer!
The only thing that has ever made Oscar fart is Lathams dog food!

Yeah, I wouldn't feed a mixture of both I don't think. Just maybe give them some raw bones every now and again? They definitely don't need anything giving them the squits! It's impossible to pick up after them when that happens

I don't know if I'd feed them raw that often, maybe more like once a week. At least to see how they cope with it. I wasn't thinking of mixing kibble and raw in the same meal so much as substituting one meal for it. I just wasn't sure if it was something that could/should be done. I don't know why lol

Beef mince with veg,vit E and some keepers mix for breakfast today.
Oscar had and accident last night. He must have been bursting because he had a pee inside. But when i let him out last night he had a pee before bed.
Wonder what was up with him? Could it be the raw?
Another improvement to report! His teeth have improved so much! Before we switched he had a fair bit of yellow on his back teeth but know thats almost completely gone!

Bonus at the butchers Bextull, nice work there.
I did a batch of blitzed up veggies tonight. usually I grate then freeze but I thought best to blend really, cellular walls and all that palaver. Today I put in sweet potato, carrot, parsnip, apple, bit of spinach, bit of kale, garlic cloves, just a few nuts (cashew, brazil and almond), apple cider vinegar and some turmeric. And I nearly blew up the blender!!!!!! Have to put more water in next time then I suppose, i only put a bit in, the machine must have found it too hard, it smoked a bit after. I must admit I've that blender for years but just kept it in the cupboard ha ha.
Does anybody know if there really is much difference, nutrition wise between grated v blitzed up? Is grated then frozen technically enough? Just in case I have actually broke the blender....

Thats quite a mix of veg you got there!!
Water! - Thats what would have made blending my veggies easier!!!
Just a tip smokeybear gave me,use ice cube boxes for the veg! Easier, cleaner and more convenient.
Grating is not as good as pulping veg. If you did break the blender then try grating and then mushing the veg up. Or do what i like to do,take it apart and try to fix it!!

Yeah I use the ice cube trays, I've got four trays for one batch, then I tip them all out into a tub for storage and make some more. Kidder gets two cubes and Babs just the one. Brilliant tip that one, so easy.

Hi,
Im glad your seeing improvements with the raw diet. Ive fed Jed raw for about 4 years, and when I got Tallulah earlier this year I changed her to raw too, as long as it suits the dog theres no way I would feed anything else!
I feed raw mince morning and night(various meats from Durham animal feeds), some carbs im a morning (potato, oats, cous cous) and with their pm meal they get veg/fruit and natural yogurt. For an evening treat it is either chicken wings or raw sardines/sprats.

Breakfast today was beef mince with a little slither of lambs liver cut into small bits. Along with his usual side of salmon oil and keepers mix.
Well the liver wasn't a hit anyway! Went in to him to see the bowl empty but one piece of liver in his bed and the other 3 bits on the floor.
I put them back in the bowl and let Oscar outside only for him to snag one on his way past!
After that, very slow chew and afew funny faces,he ate the other 3 bits.

Beef mince with salmon oil,vit E and keepers mix for breakfast today.
Went into town today to get meat. Got some turkey fillets on sale and some pig feet too! And i can get 3 lamb hearts for €2.88 in pettits when Oscar is ready for them!
And the butchers have Ox tails but they are €8.99. But that said, they are huge!!! So i might get one next week and the lamb hearts too.
One problem is that i don't know if the butchers will actually get what i need. I ask them but he never says 'yes i will' so i can't be sure if i will get everything i wanted or not.
But i don't want to go to another butchers either just in case i get too much stuff.

Hey Bextull - got some pork ribs for the idiots today. One big slab so I'll seperate them a bit before I freeze them.
And did some more veggies yesterday, the blender works fine I hadn't broke it. Put quite a bit of water in this time, about a mug full probably. Whizzed the whole lot up in about two minutes flat. Easy.
Ihaven't tried oxtails. In the shop they are always cut up into fairly small ish pieces so it's put me off. Not big enough for Kidder to chomp on much I reckon.
Do you mention to the butcher that its for the dog? Just wondering what his reaction was....

Are they time consuming?
Advantages and disadvantages?
Do you have to feed the same things daily/weekly etc etc?
Where do you get raw food?

DLG - been doing raw since May 2011 now. Started off using natural instinct frozen stuff with the odd RMB meal but now I'm off that and its DIY raw all the way. I still keep some NI stuff in the freezer though, as our dogs have to go to kennels sometimes and it's easier for them to manage there.
A bit daunting at first but after that its just as easy as opening a bag of kibble, once you've got your head around it it's not so confusing at it may appear at first. Just lots of reading to do initially, and then a bit more reading as you go along as it's just so interesting to be honest.
Our two are looking fantastic. Leaner and more muscley. No dog breath. Pooing less with nice hard stools that are easy to pick up with no smell. Babs suffers with her teeth without the raw meaty bones. The idea of manually brushing a dogs teeth to me is totally absurd. Being a JRT her teeth are really packed in close together inside that teeny mouth and they get dirty easily. RMBs really are natures toothbrush and they are looking the best they have ever done. Kidder is nearly 5 years old and his gob is gleaming
The dogs really enjoy their food, they seem satisfied after eating. They go nuts for it. How nice for a dog to enjoy their food that much.
I've found I'm getting away with just one drawer in the fridge freezer too, I thought I'd have to buy a freezer for the garage. I can shop regularly, it all comes from morrisons or wherever. Although not everyone can do that.
They can enjoy a variety of meats and offal. I also give the odd whole raw egg, fruits and sometimes whole raw fish. Variety is important. It's more about balancing their diet over a couple of weeks or so rather than within each meal. I also make up the veggie cubes and chuck those in their bowls too. No great shakes doing the cubes either as I can chuck in bits of veg (even nuts too) that we will have anyway and may even need using up.
The dogs on the whole look healthier, seem happier. Even the vet said she was super impressed with them when I took them for their annual jabs a couple of months ago. We walked in the door and the vet said wow look at these two, I rarely see two dogs looking as healthy as these. These dogs have proper waistlines!
Trying to think of disadvantages and the only one I can think of is the initial absorbing of information to get you started.
Will I ever feed kibble again? No chance, it's real food all the way now. I look at it as a traditional natural way of feeding and the only regret I have is not starting to feed this way sooner. I accept it isn't for everyone, but it definitely works for us here.

Thanks Julie72! It sounds really interesting, might have to look into it! Is it time consuming, what type of meat do you have to choose? And how much do you need to feed?

DLG I've bumped Bextulls dog food thread back up to the top of the list for you. There's a link on there you'll be interested in, it's called 'raw feeding - everything you need to know'. And it is!
Mainly chicken wings and thighs and lamb ribs here meat wise, plus liver so far. Pork shortly and a bit of beef at some point too I expect.
Amounts wise it's good to start at 3% of the dogs ideal weight (diff if puppy) and see how they get on. Kidder eats just over 3% whereas Babs (being a small dog) needs just over 4% to keep them right. Depends on exercise levels, age, breed and the individual.
I don't find it time consuming personally. I do weigh stuff though because I'm paranoid of any fatness creeping on and I'd rather they stay slim than have them creep up and subsequently cut them back. Saying that you get to know what a typical chicken thigh will weigh and that kind of thing. I used to measure out kibble so it's just the same really.

Got a very smelly dog tonight!! He is farting like anything, and fairly unsettled! I put it down to the wet cat food i used at agility today! Not sure if i will be using that again!

Breakfast - Beef mince and a bit liver with vitE,S.oil and K.mix.
He seemed to like the liver today,so it was probably just the texture that put him off the first time he had it.
Dinner - A chicken leg with breast.

3 weeks on raw tomorrow!!! When it hits four weeks i will not be posting what i feed on a daily basis anymore. But i will probably give a few sample menus every few weeks

Got WHITE POOS!!!!!!
But he has been pooing a lot today. FOUR TIMES!!!
The pig trotter must have been a lot for him to handle last night! It did take him an hour to finish it though.

Bextull that is totally normal after a pigs trotter....I think because it is quite high in fat and bone makes them poo more...I tend to give a boneless meat meal after a trotter or ribs.

Hi Bextull (and other raw feeders)
I've been looking at feeding Jasper on raw as he's hit and miss with everything else but loves 'people food'. Do you use minced beef and chicken thighs from supermarkets or from a specialist manufacturer etc.
My parents had mince last night and tried Jasper with a small ball of raw minced beef and he snaffled it down! We tried him with Prize Choice minced food from PAH and he turned his nose up at it.
Is it alright just to buy minced beef and raw chicken thighs from Tesco? I'm completely new to raw feeding so very uninformed!
Any advice/links/books would be greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance guys (and sorry for butting in on the thread )

I get all my food from butchers and supermarkets so it is fine to do that. But the only reason i do that is because there are no suppliers(other than prize choice) where i live(southern ireland)
And the reason i don't feed prize choice is because its not great.
Its not as simple as just sticking a bowl of beef mince and a chicken thigh your dogs way. There is a little more work than that.

Ahh brilliant. There's a supplier near us (Durham Animal Feeds) but as they only do boxes of 20 or so, we dont have the freezer space!
My mam did bring in a packet of Beef mince today so we can give it a go.
Also, he must have known that PC wasn't the best (We just tried it to try and ease him onto it)! I know there's certain ratios of meat/bone/offal but couldn't recall what they are!
Also, can you feed any bones raw? Bones always make me feel a bit funny because I'm always worried in case they splinter/break etc. Just me being an overcautious mother though lol
I'll have a look at the links and thanks for the information! I have a basic knowledge of feeding from my college course (enough to know not to feed Butchers and Pedigree at least lol).

You can feed most raw bones but you shouldn't feed any weight bearing bones(ie femurs etc) from larger animals(horses, cows etc)
Because these are dense hard bones that can break teeth.

He does have liver in his diet, not too much though. But i am getting heart for him tomorrow and maybe kidneys.
As soon as i make up my meals then he will be getting more offal. Need to see what the other 2 butchers in town give me first, hopefully some useful things.

ah right just I had not seen or possibly not reading properly that any of the posts had offal in them....I class heart as a muscle meat and not organ....an organ meat is one that is glandular i.e kidneys, liver, spleen, pancreas etc.
If Oscar does not like the texture of the kidneys or liver try flash frying them or blitzing them up and makin a kind of offal jus for his dinner LOL

he's a little picky with liver,he does eat it but its left till last and he eats it very reluctantly, but he would never leave it in the bowl,he eats everything!
Might try giving them a little fry the next time.

Dinner was 2 chicken drumsticks tonight.
We had a splintering incident with the 2nd drumstick though. I stepped out of the room for like 2 minutes to wash his bowl and i was right on the other side of the door then i go back in to see a splintered bone all over the floor!
I only managed to get the small bits off him though,he grabbed the big one before i could get it,but it wasn't too bad because he chewed it good.

All of the things i add are totally optional.
The vitamin E is added because i feed Salmon oil. And Fish oil depletes vitamin E so you have to add some in to make up for the amount lost,if that makes sense?
The keepers mix is just for general health, organ and gut functions and for coat and skin. You don't have to add it but its totally natural and is a mix of herbs.
On days when i give veg i do not give keepers mix,not sure why but its just the way i do things
And on days that i give fish i do not give salmon oil(but today i totally forgot and gave it to him even though he is having sardines for dinner!! )
You don't have to add anything if you don't want to,thats totally up to yourself. Lots of raw feeders dont feed keepers mix or salmon oil.
I will be adding garlic in to my veg mixes soon. Garlic is good for repelling fleas and its also totally natural.

Ohh, very interesting! It makes sense, no point feeding your dog a healthier diet if you're depleting it of essential vitamins!
The girl I work for feeds raw and uses Salmon oil but then questioned why would Vitamin E would need to be added to the diet but that's obvious an important reason!
And the keepers mix sounds brilliant! Jasper's on Dorwest Garlic and Fenugreek once a day because hes quite susceptible to kennel cough, since we started him on them in January he hasnt suffered once, so I wouldn't hesitate to use other Dorwest stuff

I was looking at the garlic and fenugreek tablets for Oscar but decided to just use the keepers mix.
Dinner tonight was sardines in tomato sauce,an egg(shell and all,but cracked because if not oscar splats it all over the floor!) and a chicken drumstick!

Just thought would put up some photos of what i got yesterday and preparing veg mixes.
3 butchers and 3 bags of scraps! Lots of chicken leg bones with no meat and 2 carcases. One butcher gave me no bones but gave me about 3kg of very good beef chunks. The beef chunks that i buy from the supermarket were nearly as good as these scraps! So i will definitely go there again!
All my veg prepared and ready to be blended(yes that is a smootie machine! )
I saved myself some money by getting a bag of frozen veg already chopped up! I also got a sweet potato, butternut squash and garlic. The frozen bag had carrots, green beans, peas, cauliflower and broccoli(but the whole bag had like 2 bits of broccoli in!)
Everything in the machine with some garlic cloves
All blended and ready to be frozen. I never got any ice cube trays so it had to be frozen in one big container and a bag. Will get ice cube trays soon.

Hey Bextull. Tip for you - looks like you have grated the some of that before blending? There's no need, even though squash/carrot is really 'hard'. Oxo cube sized bits will blend up exactly the same. Save yourself quite a bit of time that way
By the way, I made up a batch of four trays yesterday. I started with about 350ml (ish) of water and just threw all the veg in. Seems to be the right amount of water.
This time I had no squash. I did 1 apple, 2 carrots, half a handful of kale, about 8 spinach leaves, 4 cloves garlic, handful of nuts (brazil, cashew, almond), a good shake of turmeric and about 10ml cider vinegar.
It blitzed up perfectly in about a minute. Took me longer to fill the trays and wash and dry the blender than it did to prepare and blend!
Also, I notice Kidder takes longest over his pork ribs than other RMBs and he gobbles down chicken thighs a bit quick tbh. So, 2 wings instead of 1 thigh seem to work better even though I was worried they might be a bit small. Good news though, wings are cheaper!
Have you found different RMBs get eaten at different speeds with Oscar? Weird, Babs eats all hers at the same speed more or less.

Not with my machine, doesn't do big chunks. And to be honest grating is much quicker for me,when it came to the sweet potato on b.nut squash anyway because all i need to do is peel, cut it length ways and then grate in this thing that we have where you just wind the handle.
I don't grate anything other than the hard stuff.
Well he isn't getting my variety with bones to be honest. I just can't seem to get them but i will see what all the butchers will give me.
He takes a while to eat pig trotter but other than that everything gets eaten quite quickly.

I see where you are coming from now with the grating.
I've also sussed that lambs liver seems to be their favourite offal.
They had a right mixed up bowl last night. It was wings, veg cube, half an egg each (to make the weight up) and a couple of chunks of fresh pineapple on top (that was going spare). They ate their pineapple first.
It's so fascinating watching them eat their RMBs.
I've also noticed that they aren't chewing their toys so much these days. Proof the RMBs must be fulfilling their chew/crunch instincts. Xlnt! More to it than just food then
So, you intended to finish this thread after the month was up, which it now is, but tbh it's a good thread. Do you think you might keep it going? Even if you update less regularly? I think we all enjoy reading it, I do anyway. Might also be a good insight for anyone who is thinking of giving it a go. Whats reckon?

So, you intended to finish this thread after the month was up, which it now is, but tbh it's a good thread. Do you think you might keep it going? Even if you update less regularly? I think we all enjoy reading it, I do anyway. Might also be a good insight for anyone who is thinking of giving it a go. Whats reckon?
Well i was thinking of updating it every week or 2. I'd post either a 1 or 2 week sample menu when i update it. It might not be exact but it would give people an idea of what I'm feeding

My mam brought Chicken Livers and a Turkey leg to try Jasper on
We haven't gone full swing RAW yet, giving him a couple of meals a week to get him used to it seeing as he's never been fed raw food before. He seemed to enjoy what he's had so far!
I love the thread too, as Ihave no idea what I'm doing Raw-wise

I have a quick question. I'm going to get the dogs a turkey leg each today for a treat. Can I feed them these in place of their usual evening meal (bearing in mind they usually have one meal a day and it's a wet/dry complete food mix - 150g wet / 180g dry) or would I be better off giving them the legs for lunch and then giving a smaller normal meal for tea?

I have been but the butcher i usually go to never gets the things i want for me,i ask and ask but i rarely ever get.
I will be trying the one who gave me all the great beef chunks soon though, hopefully they can get me what i want and if they can i might see about making them some deals.
Orpheous- Turkey legs are huge so i think they would be fine as a meal, but have they had anything like it before? If not then they might be a little unsure of what to do.

No they haven't, Bextull.
I went ahead and gave them the turkey legs, but also some beef chunks that we got too. They ate the beef no problem, but weren't so sure of the turkey legs. I cut some of the skin off for them and Ellie tucked right into hers. She ate pretty much all of it.
Pepper didn't though and I've ended up chucking it out as I didn't want to leave it out for too long for her.
The only thing is, I didn't freeze any of it beforehand, does this matter?

Oscar was the same when he had his first leg too,but he was like ellie and ate it all eventually.
I would have put it in the fridge for ellie to have another day if pepper didn't want anything to do with hers.
No,you don't have to freeze everything. I feed chicken fresh sometimes and beef. But some people like to freeze everything before feeding it.
Maybe pepper might like it if it was frozen? Oscar loves frozen bones!

Yeah, I probably shouldn't have just thrown it out, but it had been on the floor outside and I wasn't sure if it would be okay in the fridge. I'll know for next time.
Pepper did eventually eat a couple of chunks of the meat that I'd cut off the bone, but she wouldn't touch the bone bit. I might try a chicken leg for Pepper next time, the turkey might have been a bit ambitious lol.
Can the meat be fed straight from the freezer or does it need to be thawed fully first? I didn't think they'd be able to eat it fully frozen.

Just an update.
In the past 2 weeks Oscar has had Chicken carcass, chicken bones, beef mince and chunks, part of a lamb back, part of a lamb leg and some other bone, tinned sardines(i am finally getting used to the smell!),lambs liver(which i need to get more of today!) and kidney.
He gets meat and offal in the morning and bones at night. He gets offal about twice a week. A meal of liver or kidney and beef. Keepers mix given nearly everyday, unless its veg or fish and salmon oil is every day unless its fish(or if,like right now,i dont have any) and vitamin e is every 4th day now because he really only needs 100iu a day rather than 200,he is only 15kg.
Shopping today and i got some pig trotters and these other bones for €1.50 and then 3 bags of butchers scraps, one of which has steak!

Maybe, turkey legs are quite big for a fist timer
Yep,you can. It can be fully frozen,semi-frozen or fully defrosted. Oscar loves his frozen bones! It also makes a small chicken leg last longer when its frozen.

I tried Earl on raw chicken, but it was cut up. He gobbled it and was making funny sicky noises for about 15 miuets after he'd eaten it. Now every sunday when we have a roast (involving chicken) he always whines for it. Its a good idea for a chicken diet if it suits the dog. Earl has a dry diet but still gets his vegetables and vitiman E out of it. If it suits the dog ALL the time, its the diet you wanna follow.

They were massive, mind.
Poor Pepper. Ah, well if they can eat it frozen I might try that next time then! They both gobbled down the beef chunks that I'd sprinkled their Billy No Mates on too, so I'll definitely try them again. It was weird though, Ellie smelled of raw turkey for a couple of days after she ate that turkey leg
Did you notice anything like that with Oscar when you first started feeding him raw?

My Thread!!!! I found you!!!!
Thought an update might be nice for those who liked it before!!
Oscar has been on Raw for near;y 8 months now and I can honestly say that I will never ever go back to a commercial diet! He is a fish loving dog and I can now say that the smell of fish ( within reason) does not bother me anymore!
I am currently on the hunt for a freezer and if i can get one (cheap of course) then I have 2 suppliers in mind (one does minces, they other does bones and tripe)
Today Oscar had scrambled eggs for breakfast. I usually give 1 egg raw but seeing as it snowed I let him have something warm.
For dinner her had a chicken thigh.
He gets fish once or twice a week and this can be raw or fresh. If its a whole fish then he gets no breakfast as the fish is a big meal.
His first experience of a full raw fish! (its mackerel)
Oscar gets a rather high percentage of bone in his diet and has some kind of bone each day, bar 1 or 2 days of the week. He gets RMB (usually some lamb/pork ribs{although the lamb comes in slabs} or some other boney contraption I can pull from the freezer) about twice a week. Offal is fed 3 times a week, with the RMBs and then another time after that (usually, sometimes it might only be twice)
Beef mince, chicken, turkey and pork make up the meats that i feed along with the scraps from the butchers or any left overs we have. Over summer I hope to be able to get some rabbit and game.
I'll try and get a more solid menu down for you all next week
Supplements:
He gets coconut oil instead of salmon oil now and what can I say, brilliant! Love the coconut oil! His fur is just so soft and smells lovely, its also helped him lose that little bit of weight i have been trying to get off him for ages! I get mine from holland and barrat, got 2 tubs for €18 (it was the buy one get the other for a cent deal) and I am only half way though the 1st tub.
I no longer give keepers mix because it was too expensive and I saw no benefits from it, TBH.
He does get a probiotic yougurt every now and then too and about once a week (when I forget to take out food) he will get a banana with manuka honey.
I give veg every now and then. Oscar enjoys to chew them in frozen cubes or i pop them in kongs and i use chopped veg as treats.
I'd also like to add about the effects that poor dog food has on your dogs teeth.
For a while I was using very very poor quality dog food as treats(aldi dog food! ) My dad used it for work and i got into the habit of grabbing a handful each day for treats. And for the first time ever Oscars teeth were horrible! He had plaque on his back teeth and canines and while it wasn't much by any means it has never been like it before! The culprit was, of course, the treats and I am forever kicking myself over it!

I have missed your raw diary, Bextull!
Caz and I were discussing coconut oil the other day. Which is the one you got from Holland & Barrett? I was looking (my brother has just started working there so I can get discount ) on the website and there were two or three and I wasn't sure if one was better than the other.
Both of my girls have a tiny build up of plaque on their canines and on their back teeth. I give them the seaweed & parsley supplement that CSJ do, but that doesn't reduce any build up that's already there. Did you find that the raw meaty bones on their own got rid of Oscar's plaque build up? I went into the butchers to ask for bones the other day, but he didn't have any, so I'll have to try again.

I just have ine in a green tub, its the perfectly pure one. Virgin oil is the best one to get but more expensive.

The canines are hard to keep clean because they aren't used much, but meaty chunks do help a little with them.
The best bones i can get for teeth are pig trotters. They are quite fatty and do take a while to eat but they are brilliant for teeth!
That reminds me, i must get some, oscar hasnt had one for months now!
I get small bits of lamb necks(or spines, not sure what they are really)and they seem pretty good for teeth cleaning too.

Right. I'll have another look. It'll have to wait till payday anyway, but at least I'll know what I'm looking for.
I'll have to see about getting them some pig trotters then! I'll also have to learn to not be squeamish about touching them
As I mentioned in one of the other threads, I'm considering going raw with my two. There's a supplier five minutes down the road and I know they do pig trotters so I may go and visit them one day.
The girls had raw chicken breast quarters the other week, which they loved. They were lucky that week as I'd spotted them in the reduced section in Tesco Pepper was reluctant at first, like she was with the turkey leg, but she soon realised it tasted good and polished it off.
And I'll look into the lamb necks/spines too. Anything that helps their teeth will be a bonus and hopefully stop my mam from buying them dentastix

The pig trotters i have given have never stank. There is a smell to them but it shouldn't be overly powerful.
Was it smoked by any chance?
RE the poo:
If it was hard, and small then thats normal. Pig trotters are the some of the boniest things to feed, hence the hard stools. If you do decide to give earl a trotter again do not let him have it all in one go, or you could be risking a bout of constipation and a rather uncomfortable earl when he does try to go!
I usually give some offal after trotters and no bones the next day.
Orpheous: Trotters are hard work. Might be worth trying some ribs (lamb/pork/venison not cow) first as to build up jaw muscles.

Thanks Bextull, that's a good idea.
Do you give rec bones ever? Whenever I've been looking at the different suppliers, I've seen things like beef marrow bones and beef shanks sold as rec bones, but I thought those are the ones you're not meant to give due to them being too dense?

No, I do not give rec bones. Oscar does not get any beef bones, no knuckle bones, shanks or marrow bones or anything like that. He is a cruncher and if given a bone like that would break bits off and try to eat them. I'd like his teeth to stay intact! Although I know people with larger dogs that do give beef bones.
He has gotten parts of lamb legs though. Never had trouble with those but when he had it down to just a little piece then its removed from his paws.

DR - Pepper was a bit funny about eating raw at first, but once she got the idea, she was happy to eat it.
Bextull - Ahh. That makes sense. Pepper is a cruncher too so if I make the full move to raw, she won't be getting beef bones either. It just confused me when seeing everywhere not to give the big weight bearing bones of cows etc., and then seeing the suppliers all selling beef marrow bones. There are plenty of other bones for them to enjoy at least

He had 2 chicken drumsticks tonight. he ate inside though,i am teaching him to eat on a towel and not carry bones all over the place.

Minced beef, vitamin E and salmon oil for breakfast. Oscar actually ate his vit E capsule himself today! Hide it in a ball of mince and he has no problem at all!

Go on, start nagging your parents hee hee

I didn't gag tonight opening the sardines, and Oscar ate those first! the first pork rib went down fine, but he had a bit of trouble with the second one. But he finished it eventually.

Yeah, I wouldn't feed a mixture of both I don't think. Just maybe give them some raw bones every now and again? They definitely don't need anything giving them the squits! It's impossible to pick up after them when that happens
Bextull wrote:
Orpheous- If all you can do is mix raw with commercial foods then go for it! Thats what i did before i switched fully. Oscar had about 2 or 3 raw meals a week and he had RMB each week too. As for mixing kibble and raw in the same meal,i'm not to sure about that. There is no research done to suggest that they digest at different rates, and i have done it with no problems since we got Oscar. But i would think that it varies from dog to dog.

But its all taking a big toll on the freezer! Got no space in it anymore!

Hi,
Im glad your seeing improvements with the raw diet.

I don't know much about raw diets?

Dinner today was beef mince, with a little liver and a chicken drumstick.

I love the keepers mix! I think its great!

Earl has a pig trotter...
He loved it but it stank and gave him different poo. He ended up with it being confiscated because he got so excited he stood staring at it, whining his head off! We haven't tried it again since!
I felt like a mum confiscating my kid's iPhone
