With my NI Prize of Raw Food, we have decided to give Earl a try on the raw food. We will be giving him the liver treats too, but we are not quite sure whether or not we should feed him the Chicken Wings because of the danger that the bones might get stuck in Earl's throat or gut.
What does anybody else think to this? Does anyone else have experiences, good or bad, about feeding chicken wings to dogs?
Anything will be highly appreciated.
Thank you, BT

Chicken wings are the recommended bones to start dogs off on as the bones are quite soft. If you're worried about Earl gulping the chicken wing whole, try holding onto the end and letting him try and chew a bit off the other end. Then he should get the idea that he needs to chew it and not swallow it whole. I had to do this for Pepper the first few times she had chicken quarters. Obviously, as has been said on other threads, nothing is risk free but I think there's more risk of the bone getting stuck if he tries to swallow it whole than if he chews it up. Another way to do it is to stretch the wing out and leave the end hanging over the rim of his bowl so that the weight of the wing will drag it down and he won't try to gulp it (I think julie72 mentioned doing that in a thread on the old forum). There's also the option of feeding them frozen as I think that way, he wouldn't have choice in chewing them. I've never fed them frozen though, so I don't know for sure on that.

Hi BorderTerrierAll three of our dogs love chicken wings. I think they are a great chew & are a good introduction to bones. Poultry bones (as long as they are raw obviously) are quite flexible and soft bones therefore meaning they can easily be crunched and are less likely to cause problems in my opinion. I would certainly give some to Earl and see how he finds them, I'm sure he will be a fan!! Good luck with your switch to Raw

I haven't fed them but from what I've read and heard as long as he chews then no problems. Like said above encourage him to chew it by you holding it so he has to chew and not try swallow in the one go. Keep and eye and go slow

You could use a large (chinese style) chopper to smash the bones, or chop it into small pieces and feed bit by bit. I once had a 9 week old min pin puppy swallow a whole chicken wing and look for more.

We are still discussing and deciding about this - it is not a decision to be taken lightly! And I also think some people are misunderstanding when I say we are giving Earl a try on the raw food. I did not say we are going to be giving Earl a try on raw food I meant we are going to be mixing in some of the NI Prize raw food I won and see how he gets on. Its not a definite swap.
